I have to agree with Harris. Well, perhaps not to the extreme of an ice pick through the ear. There are near countless excellent tobacco blends that don't have the Lakeland essence. Smoking a Lakeland, at let to me, would be like strolling into Morton's Steak House and ordering a hot dog. Note, however, that is just my taste. I could care less if someone smokes Lakeland tobacco, Lane Cherry or whatever. In fact, I wish more people did so the good tobacco would be more readily available.

 Eye-rite! Perhaps mass olfactory hysteria, or members of the "Homeopathy Believers Club"??
I have even seen it suggested that the very atmosphere in the Gawith Hoggarth factory causes ghosting of unscented GH blends. The poor chaps working there must stink of granny's knickers drawer and be scared to drink in Kendal's pubs!!! And maybe when the wind blows from the east (i.e.from the Lake District towards Northern Ireland) it might explain why some claim to have detected Lakeland Essence flavours in occasional batches of St Bruno!!

The ice pick is intimidation to prove a bigger swinging d*ck. Though not frightened, I concede the honor.

No matter what use a corn cob, cause Lakeland’s ghost like crazy.
I tried Ennerdale Flake and it was definitely that Lakeland “essence”. Nothing but old lady perfume and urinal cake. Before that people would say aromatics have a soapy or chemical like flavor to them and I didn’t get it cause Lane 1Q, BCA etc. doesn’t, but this Lakeland essence is pure soapy chemically old lady perfume nastiness.
I will pray for you that you make it through this experience.

I have never tried a blend with the "essence". I do love 1792 flake, but I don't think that counts. Would you consider St. Bruno a lakeland essence blend?

workman: if you want to try one with Lakeland Essence I suggest Coniston Cut Plug (Ennerdale is at the extreme end of the spectrum for a first go). Sadly I can't tolerate blends with Lakeland Essence, and I am very sensitive to its presence. Which is interesting as I love Revor Plug, which definitely has a light perfumed flavour (not LE though, IMO) at the start. Maybe it's the soap/scent combination that does me in?
Re: SG 1792 Flake (and "Cob" - its plug version) I don't detect any Lakeland Essence, although it is an SG blend from the Lake District. Perhaps it is swamped by the tonquin flavouring of 1792, as any other flavouring might be. 1792/Cob is a "love it or hate it" tobacco - I love it!
St Bruno? No, in my previous post I was jesting!

First one i tried was bobs chocolate flake and i absolutely love it.

I guess its pretty black and white, you either love it or hate it with nothing in between

Dont be afraid to try it. You could be missing out on what could end up being one of your favorite smokes.

Ya its a weird flavor like nothing i've ever tried before, but in a good way.

Besides can't say you hate it until you try it. Thats the best part of this hobby...the experiences

I get pretty pissed off with people lumping all the Kendal blends into the floral/soapy bracket.

There isnt even just one Lakeland Essence as there are different "ingrediants" used in different blends and as stated some are totally Essence free.As stated its a bit like the Peterson bashing somebody states it on a forum and the sheep pick it up and spread the falsehood.

Each to his own but make your own mind up.No one is right or wrong

personally I smoke lots of Bosun/Ennerdale and Dark Plug/Flake/bogie scented and love it.I dont especially like straight virginias but dont read threads bashing them

Paulfg, I think as I read through this thread that most of us enjoy Lakeland’s. I have noticed that as we get more European members and guys who want to explore new things and stronger tobaccos, we have picked up a majority of Lakeland smokers, or at least more who are trying them. In exploring new Kendals, twists, and Lakeland flakes, I have found that they aren’t all “granny panties.” There are some awesome vanillas, interesting new Virginias from around the world, and just totally new experiences out there,

I love it when I can smoke some heavy hitter twist and my wife tell me that it smells great. Or, when walking about with my pipe and someone comments that it smells exotic or cosmopolitan. Some of the blends mentioned, I probably will never grow a taste for, but I for one like to point out that not all Lakeland’s are created equal.

I admit I'm guilty of lumping the "floral and soapy" blends into "lakelands." I honestly don't have enough experiene with all those type of blends - nor do I smoke them all that often. Forgive my ignorance as I bunch them all together and I'm far from a purist on the lakeland topic.
Being a GLP fan, I don't get upset if a guy calls a particular Pease blend a Balkan when I think it's more of a true English (we could run hundreds of threads on English versus Balkan). Plus the entire "naming of all the tobacco blends surely has a lot of overlap in their descriptions. I do admit lakelands seem to fall into quite a foggy area as far as descriptions go.
I dont get upset if someone bashes down SG FVF (too wet, no flavor, burns horrible, etc) and that happens quite frequently so it's not just a lakeland thing along with the never ending corncob smashdown. It's all just opinions. And some opinions (like mine) are meant to be harmless but upset others sometimes because my knowledge on the topic is lacking or I'm just spouting out a generalized opinion. Nothing more.
In summary, I don't like any of the soapy/floral blends that are overly powerful in the soapy/floral category but I do enjoy the lighter ones which have a soapy/floral scent to them. Whatever they may be called.
I'll call them "soapy/floral" for now. And avoid using the lakeland term.

paulfg, for every one of you that talks about Lakelands from fact, there are 10 others who simply repeat like parrots the disparaging things they've read, and they say the same things, often including "urinal cake" and "granny's panties." I must say I have my doubts that among you there are any who have sniffed any granny's panty.
I've been reading this bilge for 16 years, and it never changes, and at this point I ask myself why I continue to read it at all. So, I'm outta here unless one of you wants to get a might bit frisky with icepick imagery, and so forth.
On that note and in closing, as was alleged, let me confess to being the premier enabler of Lakeland-tainted pipes to the free world.

SmokeGh&Co Ennerdale, Bobs Chocolate Flake, and Rum Flake. Try them in that order.
Then try SG 1791 Flake.
At that point you are a Lakeland Smoker, if you pass the test Perdurabo has laid out for you. :puffy:

My problem with the "Lakeland flavors" is when I find them where they're not supposed to be. For me, the quality control at GH is lacking. There's nothing more frustrating than to have Brown Flake supposedly unscented or Deluxe Twist XXX scented by those floral/soap flavors.

Has any of the GH lovers here ever had the opportunity to try Nessmuk Navy Flake/plug? I've read it is really good but was only available through GQ Tobacconist, before it went out of business. Does anybody have a sample that they wouldn't mind sending me to try? I know this is a long shot but thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.
