I know how polarizing Lakeland blends are, but I could use some suggestions from those of you who like them. I want to deeply cellar a great Lakeland blend. I fell in love with GH Broken Flake #7 a few years ago. I recently pulled out a tin of Ennerdale I had lying around and found the flavor divine, when I got it, but the flavor was a bit elusive. I am waiting for a tin of Kendall Cream to arrive. I want a blend with a solid, strong Lakeland essence. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Someone ran a poll on Lakeland with the most sauce, I'm pretty sure. I vaguely recall proffering Mahogany as the most souped up I'd tasted, but I'm no expert.

Read up on lakelands. A number of members have mentioned that over time the toppings fade. I dont recall how long. So too deep results in very different blends.

Interesting, only because the Broken Flake #7 I have is older than my Ennerdale and I get much more of the essence from #7. Ennerdale scored very high on the old post. Maybe my palate is just more attuned to the flavor of #7???

It seems to me that there is no consistency in toppings on pipe tobacco from year to year. Doesn't matter what it is, Lakelands or U.S. OTCs. I, too, was disappointed in Ennerdale, bought for kicks. Good tobacco, but nothing wild. Won't even ghost anything. Sad. ;)

On the other hand (I have two), my taster may be off. Or I could be brain dead. One never knows.

Ever since Doppelgänger Bob got fired for always being drunk on third shift and dumping too much secret sauce on the tobacco, things haven’t been the same. Could be the essences G&H purchase fron their suppliers have changed - could be - or a stricter adherence to the established formulas - all these things are tantamount to why the tobacco taste lighter when it comes to sauce. But my money is on a sauced up third shifter who liked to serve up a generous pour. And why not. It’s as good as any other explanation. 😂

@telescopes : That sounds a reasonable explanation over all the other theories bandied about on this forum. I bet you if they started doing it the old way people would complain that their tobacco was too wet or something! rotf
THAT EXACTLY. Go back three years and the complaints were all about how heavy the sauce was. Whine, whine, whine. The tobaccos were wet, they ghosted pipes and the main critic was if only they would pull back on the sauce. Some even suggested aging and drying the tobacco to “improve” it. Be careful what you wish for.

Conversation at the Drunken Duck…Le' me tell you matessy. Old Bob use to work a' Gawith Hoggarth. Third shif' i did- jus' me and my lonesome. No one looking in on me or bother’in me. Every now and then , I give myself a few extra sips fro my pin' and fertilized the aftermouth on the production linessy - after I run a few pints through my liver, if you ge' the meaning.

Yes! To me the whole point of the Lakeland tobaccos was the "sauce". Lay it on thick😉
Alas, the ghost of Lakeland past........

That’s too bad. I really enjoy the flavor! It’s my standard change-up to my straight Virginias. I WANT certain pipes ghosted with the stuff!
