Benadryl works for many people.
I've been sleeping like crap for weeks now.
The damnable misery of this, is that I am repulsed by routines, yet that is how your day/night sleep rhythms need to be in order to be reliable.
I was actually sleeping better when I had a nasty URI while taking Benadryl so I'll second this.
I've also had some measure of success using brainwave pattern inducing audio.
Your brain goes into several levels of consciousness during sleep. They say without REM sleep, your brain chemistry will go out of whack and you'll go insane (this is no joke).
Guinness Book of World Records longest recorded period of REM sleep is 23 minutes. So it's proven science that it's not about quantity of sleep, it's about quality. I've felt great after 3-4 hours of sleep before, and I've slept for 10 hours and woke up feeling exhausted, I'm sure you guys have been there.
Anyway back to brainwave patterned audio, there are CDs out there that use rhythms and different pitched tones that mimic the same frequencies your brain function at during different levels of sleep.
Atmosphere Deluxe, (hope mods don't feel the need to mark this as spam ... sharing this link in the hopes it might help) has several of these patterns as options in this software. It's an ambient audio program, and has the most customizable options of any that I've seen.
