I'm a little confused on how reaming the chamber walls clears blockages. I just run a pipe cleaner down the draft. YMMV

But, when I do need to ream, I just use a very sharp knife, but after being here a while I decline to suggest this type of thing to folks, because it does take a certain amount of skill to use.
Sometimes there can be a buildup of cake at the very bottom of the bowl which can block the draft hole. And, it might be too thick or stubborn to remove with a pipe cleaner. I use the rounded tip of the knife to remove it by scraping it in a vertical motion, followed by a pipe cleaner. If the pipe cleaner won't get through I use a piece of coat hanger about 6" long and folded to make a handle, to push any goop out of the draft hole and into the bowl for removal. puffy

Knowledge is priceless only until someone comes with a gun and try to steal it. At that moment, one usually wishes knowledge is in a cold hard cash.

I understand. I usually run a pipecleaner down the draft after each smoke, so I rarely get caked over drafts. So, the OP where you mention jumping right to the knife had me confused.

Never, ever have I seen the heel of the chamber caked to any degree at all, much less blocking the draft hole. Stubborn dottle, for sure.

Removing the stem from a hot pipe has long been bruited about as a terrible thing to do. I have not found so, whether running hot water through or not.

Best tips: Dry the tobacco before loading and flush the chamber and airway with very hot tap water right after a smoke. Or clean a dozen pipes in a batch. Mineral oil on the stem and stummel protects the pipe and makes it look better.

Uhhhh... I can send you one of my pipes. The heal is where I don't usually scrape back much, so the heals of my pipes seem to cake over, sometimes completely. For me, I don't understand why some people's heals DON'T cake over. Isn't it interesting.

Good heavens! Is that real cake- hard carbon- or stuck hard dottle?

It would seem to imply that all smokes are to the bottom - ya know, fine white ash and all.

Always one more mystery to solve.... Gotta heal that heel!

Cake as far as I know. Why? I have no idea, as I thought everyone had this problem. But I am one of those that hardly ever has to relight my pipes as keep them in my clench down to the very bottom. I know, I know... we tell the newbies that relighting is not a shame, and so it is not. But, I don't feel as though I have had a decent smoke if "I" have to relight my pipes. I just figure that telling newbies not beat themselves up over relighting is like a fairy tale, or something you tell children. If I was constantly relighting... I'd just smoke cigars. Relighting is for beginners (for me) and may explain why I cake my heals so fast. Maybe... puffy

Maybe we have different views on what cake is. To me, it's a hard layer of carbon, or at least a firm layer of carbon and ash that doesn't come out with a light reaming or scraping of the dottle.

Heal your heel! :)

Man, you're really going to suggest that it is not cake in the bottoms of my pipes. Seriously, if you'll PM me your address, I am glad to send you one of my pipes. I have plenty, and I totally trust you to send it back.

On a different track, I say don't get hung up on brand and blend marketing. Sometimes your best smokes will come out of a bag, baggie, or pouch, or the jar into which they've been emptied. I rejoice in various premium blends, but I don't think of them in a separate category. If it is a wonderful smoke, it's a wonderful smoke. Don't second guess it by remembering the price.

Thanks. I am flummoxed. Since I've never experienced over caking of the heel, and seen many photos here where there's no cake even started at the heel I am not visualizing the process.

I am not good at getting things in the mail, so don't send me anything of value! No, I trust you, just have huge gap between my experiences and observation and the phenom you describe.

I think one to the things that makes guys look at the reaming situation differently, is that we don't all clean our pipes the same way. I, for one, like a little cake in my pipes, but sometimes I am guilty of letting it get too thick and create a problem. That's when the knife, reamer, cleaners, coat hanger all come out. What I posed here may not apply to everyone. Take or leave what you will. puffy

Definitely need some small level of skill. I've seen hundreds of what would have been fabulous vintage pipes, ruined by the clumsy knife skills of their pea brained owners. Much worse than arming the average pipe smoker with a buffer.

Heck, I stopped recommending people could take stems out while the pipe was hot after I watched a few meat handed people with sausage fingers just rip them out like a gorilla opening a banana.

I don't own a buffer or a reamer. I buff my pipes with an abrasive cloth if needed, and then a soft cloth, and scoop out the ash and wipe out the chamber with an abrasive paper towel after each smoke. I want my pipes to look well maintained, clean, but not necessarily brand new, just appetizing.
