The tin of Klondike that I smoked was also from the original release

Klondike Gold is definitely not DF repackaged. Anyone who says it is is totally mis informed and if they cannot taste the difference then that is on them.
R. Will is a master blender who has a unique style and I am a big fan of his Solani Silver Flake and his 633. I have smoked a lot of the DF and BKG and while they are both Virginia Flakes and both really tasty, DF has more of a citrus backbone and BKG has none of that and is more complex and a tad sweeter. DF has some caramel hints that BKG does not have.

I disagree with the above....and Solani Silver Flake is my favorite blend. I really believe that they are the same, but I've been wrong once or twice!

Now you have let slip the dogs of war, lol.
I would like to compare the two blends but to do that I need the same vintage and I don't have that.
Now, Escudo and DNR - those are clearly one and the same.

jon, how could they possible be the same when they are mfg'd by two different companies? Now if they came from the same house then you could legitimately try to make a comparison. I find Capstan Blue to be more like DF than BKG.
peck, if you had any taste buds you would be able to recognize that DNR is sweeter than Escudo with less peppery notes, seeing you have your taste buds up your ass, of course you cannot tell the difference. :nana:

I'll throw my opinion in the mix, not only do the flakes look nothing alike, but but the flavour profiles are quite different. The BKG flakes are less uniform and thinner than DF, the DF has clearly more Virginia in it as the flake is much brighter in colour. I have to agree with Harris in that these are both quality flakes but nowhere close to being the same. Honestly not quite sure how that can be considered possible they're so different.

Yes but not the Brian referred to, that would be Brian Levine US Director of Sales for Brigham.

I smoked a second bowl of this today. I didn't fully rub it out like I did the first time and I enjoyed the smoke 100% more it was really good.

mass, rubbing out flakes takes away the cool burning and intense flavors they offer because they burn too hot. I either cube cut of fold and stuff my flakes for great results.
jon, no need to wait for Brian as he is going to tell you that BKG is made by R. Will and DF is Scandinavian group. R.Will does not share his proprietary blends with anyone, and his style is very unique. Also BKG is aged 2-3 years in the tin before it is sold and DF is sold fresh. You can definitely taste the age in the BKG and you can taste how DF is young.
It is time to face the indisputable facts that they are not the same. You need to trust me as I am a flake maven and if they were the same, I would know it immediately. I smoke nothing but flakes, have 28 different ones in my cellar equaling 250 pounds of them.

Here I am, back from six days of travel that had me sleeping in three different cities and one Red Eye flight. The answers are:
1. Klondike Gold was blended by R.L. Will for Brigham to take the place of Dunhill Flake in Canada when Dunhill became unavailable. Obviously Will would not match Dunhill Flake but, gave us what he felt was his/better version of a Virginia Flake trying to make it closer to the Murray's version then the current Orlik.
2. The initial shipment in the US were from a batch made over two years ago. They had been delayed due to licensing. The current product available was made this past winter. We always use a mix of crops from the past two to five years.
3. All of the Legend Series blends, while similar to Dunhill, will be different simply because they are blended by R.L. Will and made in Germany while Dunhill is made by Orlik.
I hope that kind of clears up the story.
Thanks,
Brian

Thanks, Brian!
That clears that up. I'm putting my KG on the shelf for a couple years. It's a very nice smoke right now, but it is outstanding with some age on it.
