Have had several unsuccessful chunks in between. Thinking I could take just a tad more off with the belt sander - Zoom gone!

Sanding through the airway - Zoom gone! Three consecutive pieces of briar that had serious pits flaws!!! Zoom gone! Those ones hurt the most.

I offer this as a Fugly kinda freehand but a great smoker. Function first????

Brass insert is 1/8" rod. I left the plateau top virgin just because I wanted to thinking it would look funky but it certainly looks fugly.

Doesn't look ugly to me! Nor fugly, whatever that means. I'd stain the plateau to match the bowl.
Nice bit of work!
Edit- Didn't really see the last image- and yeah, that's kinda rough around the edges, so to speak. Still, I like it.

Nothing fugly about it. I think it's a fine looking freehand. I would probably have stained the plateau top, but looking at yours as is, it's a nice touch leaving it unstained. Adds a bit of character. I like it.

Nice for #7,,,Kinda wonky on the shot from the top... remove more wood until it doesn't appear lopsided....
