Yes Gentlemen and Urchins, getting those mason jars cost that much money. Its for the "shipping" and "customs duty". I say its just pure ole greed.
Indian mason jars, well we don't have a concept like that here. Kilner jars are affordable here, but then its like playing Russian roulette when it comes to their rubber seals.

Very good question Dan. Initially I was buying bail top jars with rubber seals then suddenly they were coming with silicone seals. I now know why.......the rubber seals can (and have in my case) fail whereas so far I've had no problems with silicone seals.
That said, I eventually moved over to the two part screw top Kilner and Ball jars. More expensive (here in Blighty) but much more dependable. Also you can check the seal without opening the jar by simply pressing the button on the top.
