Well April 2012 has officialy been the worst month of my life. You may have remembered my post about Kharma when it left me stranded on the side of the road. As if all that couldn't get worse, yesterday was the straw that broke the camels back. My job of 2 1/2 years decided to do departmental cut backs due to lack of available work so they laid a bunch of people off. Now they could have done it by seniority or even productivity but its like they were throwing darts at the list of employees. Out of 75 employees about 28 of them were top performers, I being one of them. The company laid off 11 of the top performers most of which had seniority and family. Well I am on the unemployment line. They didn't give severance because most of us had vacation left and 401k pay outs to take advantage of. Its hard enough to find work right now let alone a job that paid as well as that one. With the wife being the only income we have now have to make huge adjustments because my income was about 75% of the household income. If I don't find something quick a lot of things will happen that we don't want to have happen. Last night we cut off everything that was luxury and even just paying the required bills we will only have a couple hundred bucks for groceries and gas. Guys wish me luck on the job search if I can't gain employment by the end of May I will have to start selling things. Wish I could say the pipes would be the last thing, but will probably be the first things to sell. You guys are great and I am glad to have you guys to talk to.
Thanks for everything so far.

Iprobably won't leave the forum but may go off line if I have to shut off the cell and wireless. I worked it out with the wife. Since I stocked up on bacci I should be ok for a few months to come. I may keep 3-4 pipes but may have to get rid of the rest.

Been there, done that several times, be very aggressive with the job search, they usually don't just fall in your lap like you think they would. One time I went to a factory every work day for 3 weeks straight and the secretary finally said, " You must want a job here more than anyone, as no one has been as persistent as you"....I got the job that day.

Sorry about you rotten luck. I hope you find a new job quick. Hey this could end up being a good thing, I don't know how much you liked your job, but I seem to remember you saying you didn't like it. Maybe you will be able to find a job doing something you really like.

I wish you the best of luck, I remember you posted on the very first topic I ever made, and most after that. Your advice has always been golden. I'm sure you will land on your feet, don't be ashamed to take a lower paying job, any income is better than nothing, and you can still try to find a better job. Also your old work may have a list of businesses hiring, that's how my uncle found his new job after he was laid off.

That's terrible. You'd think they'd be a bit more smart in their selection of employees to lay off if they chose both seniors and top performers to go.
On a related note, how does unemployment work in the US? Do you get money from the gov by some kind of insurance and if so, do you have to pay monthly when you do have a job?

From what I understand buisnesses pay an insurance claim for every unemployment claim. This will be my first time evr filing for unemployment so I really don't know much about it.

When you file make sure tour t's are crossed and your i's are dotted. They dont make it easy. Everything is online nowadays. If you have to call your claim center start calling 15min before they open.

Just a little FYI

I spent yesterday cleaning up the resume and applying to about 20 different mortgage companies here in Jacksonville, FL. Any help some of you guys can throw at me would be appreciated. Thanks for the well wishes.

Sorry to hear about your situation my friend. I wish you luck on your search. Things are picking up in the oilpatch, you might want to consider the joys of offshore work. It pays really well if you can get it, and it's much safer than people are led to believe. Keep in touch!
