Just curious. In theory wouldn’t currency of a stated value, found in the country that guarantees that value, be worth exactly that stated value? Like if I passed down a one dollar bill to my children and they did theirs and so forth, could the US really say it’s ever worth more than one dollar, even if it could be sold for more?

In the USA the coins found would still be valid for the face amount.

So a $20 gold piece round still be good money for $20. But the bullion value today is almost $2,000 and the antique coin value even more.

I’d guess the IRS would count the highest value as FMV.
