Stoved red Virginia plug. I’ve only had two bowls, so more than a grain of salt may be needed. Much like Sutliff 515-RC-1 or Red Virginia Crumble Cake, this smells like it was dipped in white vinegar. However, that comes through in the smoke considerably less than I remember with 515-RC-1 (which to me was distractingly unpleasant). After about the first third of the bowl, I didn’t notice it much at all. YMMV

This leans much more savory than Christmas Cheer or Carolina Red Flake, though there is a consistent, if muted, sweet note that I notice in the finish. There is a pleasant spicy tingle and mustiness in the retrohale which is almost perique-like.
The flavor becomes considerably more rich in the second half of the bowl, which is well worth slogging through the vinegar after lighting. The sweetness ramps up a touch, and a clove/cinnamon and toasty breadiness pops up. An old-fashioned fruitcake wouldn’t be too far off the mark as a comparison.
All in all, this is a very tasty red virginia if you aren’t looking for a ton of sweetness.
I cube cut it and dried till hard, and that worked well. No bite detected, and it burned well with a couple of relights.
Given the other red virginias out there, I’m not sure it’s worth the higher price. However, the savory spiciness (without any harshness) differentiates it a bit from others in the genre.
