A Stanwell Majestic (190)
Just spied this and thought I'd share it. Could be a very nice billiard to get started with - nice price at $60!

That pipe is screaming "HELP, CLEAN ME!!!" Only thing that will make that stem better is sandpaper, it is very heavily oxidized. Walker Briar Works cleaner wouldn't affect it at all. I'm glad you got your fathers pipes, I restored the ones my dad has and gave them back in near new condition. Use 1,500 grit or higher sandpaper as the last step, before that, some 600 works fine. Since the sandpaper is less hard than vulcanite, it will not remove the stem, only the oxidization.

Soak the stem in oxiclean and warm water for about an hour first. It will make it come off quicker.

Bleach is not recomended by Walker Briar Works, he says it permantly damages the vulcanite; faster is not always better.

@rothnh Thanks for catching that - I totally agree. In my haste I just saw it and pasted. Will try to be more careful in my recommendations!

Oxiclean is not bleach. I have been restoring estates for a while now and oxiclean is recommended by a lot of people.

My bad I think I got that wrong, I looked up Oxyclean and someone said it was an oxgynated bleach. Wikipedia also says it contains bleaching agents... It may not be as strong as bleach, using those chemicals though just does not sound good. I'll go label reading tomarrow.

I have looked up the ingrediants in Oxiclean and just to confirm, Oxiclean contains bleach, no doubt about it, therefore I would not use it. Faster is not always better, especially when faster involves corrosive chemicals where there are none required.

I looked on their website, I looked up bleach, I even looked up the chemical compounds in each. Oxiclean does not have bleach in it. It has a form of hydrogen peroxide in it but no bleach. Again I have been cleaning estates for a while. I learned it here from many many many members. It is a common thing to remove oxidation. You do have to combine it with micromesh though.

Up until now I had a bulldog basket briar but it's not really nice so I just added a Savinelli bent billiard, the billiard shapes are just awesome. Not sure about what's next on the list. One thing I can say is today I just learned what PAD is and I think I'm already coming down with it...

This is an excerpt explaining the main active component in oxygen based bleach. Oxiclean has it.
•Oxygen solutions contains hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or hydrogen peroxide releasing compounds, for example, sodium perborate, sodium percarbonate or sodium persulfate, etc. Hydrogen peroxide is itself an active ingredient but Perhydroxyl anion, OOH- acts as the main active agent in a bleaching solution. Hydrogen peroxide is commonly used in hair bleaching.
Wikipedia also reinforces this by saying it has bleaching agents in it.

"OxiClean is a detergent and bleaching agent marketed by Church & Dwight."
Sounds like if you want to use a product without bleaching agents, the detergent alone might be better, but then the bleaching agents are probabley what is removing the oxidization, since that is one thing bleach does very well...

Not to split hairs here, but Hydrogen Peroxide, while a bleaching agent, IS NOT Chlorine Bleach, which is what I think you're thinking of Eric. While both will attack stains in fabrics, they do it differently. I'm assuming the same can be said for ridding your vulcanite of oxidation. So, just because they function the same, the chemical reaction for each is completely different.

Hydrogen Peroxide isn't household bleach. People wash their mouth out with the stuff! Wikipedia is a terrible resource. Users can edit what they will. I will not accept that as a source. Oxiclean is sold on the platform it doesn't contain bleach. I am done with the argument though. Who am I really going to listen to? Over 20 people who use oxiclean to clean pipe stems with success or one company granted it is a good company the numbers speak for themselves.
Sorry for jacking your thread mp31guitar.

And here I thought all bleach was bad... Time to do some more learning! Yeah I don't trust Wikipedia either, that's why I used it as a second source and not the primary one.

I'm pretty content with my pipe collection, but I browse ebay from time to time as well. I'm always looking for something new, and when I find it I tell myself I need said pipe because I don't have enough of that style. Which at this point is true as I only have about 15 total pipes.
