Always wanted one of these large bowl briar nose warmers. Love that the smoke stays so close to your nose, and just adore the look.

Haven't heard of the maker before, but the briar looks high quality.

David Huber: Sandblasted Nosewarmer Billiard

David Huber showcases a remarkable eye for gentle curves and elegant line work, design cues often reflected in the Danish school of pipe making which often pairs supple bowls to aerodynamic, pinched shanks. In this piece, Huber opts for a compact Billiard of Nosewarmer proportions, coming in under five inches in length. While a pipe of a travel-friendly size, this piece features a tall, thick bowl, boasting a generous chamber capacity, and rendering a robust, playfully proportioned design — not unlike pipes seen from Italian makers — but with the softer lines and smooth, gently rounded rim of many Danish pipes.

The shank-and-stem combination bolsters the towering bowl with sleek, low-slung lines, anchoring most of the visual and physical weight upfront. With a slight forward cant, the bowl features a broad, lightly rounded heel that allows the piece to sit quite sturdily while also making for a plump, firm feeling in hand. The low-profile sandblast richly textures the stummel in a stark, dark-chocolate stain that pairs well to the vulcanite saddle stem, making for a shadowy complexion accented by a smooth, lightly stained rim.

Looks like a winner. Some dislike having the smoke so close to their nose, but I've never had a problem with that and have five or six pipes in the nose warmer configuration. Like bent pipes, short pipes exert less leverage and are easier to clench, because they feel lighter than they would with longer stems. And it appears you have plenty of chamber to work with. Exciting to wait for that one.

Thank you - its probably my favorite type of pipe. Short nose warmer poker/billiard with deep bowl. Much easier to manage and no jaw fatigue. Can keep your hands in your pockets a lot more for a winter smoke.

“We've known pipe maker David Huber almost as long as he's made pipes. During that time he has grown tremendously as an artist and has helped to redefine the neo-Danish, American school of pipe design. David began like many pipe makers do: rudimentary tools, some free time, and big plans. What set his work apart early on was his eye.

With a background in Technical Theatre, David brought together not only his knowledge from the realm of fine arts, but his natural talents, abilities, and his passionate love for the beauty of briar to create pieces that are, in his own words, "wholly recognizable and completely unfamiliar." Expect to see interesting reinterpretations of the Egg, Rhodesian, and Dublin, as well as organic freehand designs that push the boundaries of pipe making.

David prefers freehand designs to classic shapes, although functionality is never sacrificed. Instead he creates playful compositions designed to invoke an emotional response from the pipe smoker along with excellent engineering and performance. David only uses the best grade Greek and Italian briar paired with high grade German ebonite, bakelite, and occasionally soft acrylic.

Currently based out of the Liberty Arts Sculpture Studio and Foundry in Durham, NC, giving him access to something many pipe makers do not, namely access to artists from other media across the art world. We're excited to see the influence this has on his work and the influence he has on theirs.

We are honored to represent his work and consider David not only a friend, but as one of the most disciplined, serious, and amicable pipe makers carving today. We hope you enjoy the work of David S. Huber.”
