Their marketing strategy is designed to tweak the very behavior you're talking about.
Can't fault a company for doing their best to make their product seem/be desirable. If their marketing results in the immediate sale of their entire stock, and the product is good enough to warrant it, why is that bad?

They have no control over what their customers choose to do with the product once purchased.

Is this red Virginia stuff not being made anymore? If people love this blend and the Mclelland red Virginia blends that much, you’d think someone would want to sell into that market.

I know what you're saying and on one hand I admire C&D's ingenuity. They've done a better job than most to promote their blends to cellaring fans and hoarders, even if it sometimes means taking a more or less conventional product and making it seem remarkable and rare. From what I can see, it seems to be working pretty well for them. On the other hand, it's also a bit complicated. The tobacco industry has had a long history of trying to promote their products in questionable and sometimes unethical ways. Which is part of the reason the FDA is regulating the industry with such a heavy hand today.

I hear what you're saying. I mean "limited release" isn't exactly on par with Spongebob's Passion Fruit Pineapple E-juice, but I hear you.

I think that's why this Carolina Red Flake has had such success. I personally wouldn't be stocking up on it if I could still buy McClelland tins at retail price. My understanding is part of the reason McClelland shut down is because of the scarcity of quality red VAs. So fans of red VA dont have a lot of options nowadays and this C&D small batch is one of the best ones left to my taste buds.

That is a twisting of the original message McClellands gave us for the reason... it's not a lack of reds, but one particular grower supplied them with raw leaf that is no longer doing so...
I had written more, but it's not my place to correct people. Ha ha, but I will agree that it may be misinformed buyers affecting the market.

I also wonder if the lack of good tobacco is biting the blenders again. Wasn't a lack of quality Red VA one of the reasons given for McClelland exiting the market? (my memory is knit with a pretty loose skein) If they can't procure enough for a blend to be readily available year-round, "limited editions" may make sense.

Doh! I see that this has already been covered by Skydog above. That will teach me to read before pushing the fool button!

I think the tobacco I already have cellared will last me long after death, and since I'm just not sure how easy it is to smoke when dead , I think I'll pass up this oppurtunity. Though I may regret it when I'm dead, who knows.

Feel free to correct away! You won't hurt my feelings, I'm always up to learn more! I think it was this article where the McNiels talked about the change in the way virginia tobaccos were picked, going from hand picked to mechanical harvesting resulting in less sugar content, which lead me to believe that the quality of red virginia tobacco today had decreased. I know there is still red virginia tobacco out there, I've bought plenty since McClelland closed up shop. But none of it seems to be the same quality as what the McNiels were selling.

Right now 4Noggins has 2017 Carolina Red Flake tins for $95

I'd take that with a grain of salt. Almost all the 4Noggins consignment tins carry a hefty and exaggerated price tag. They currently have a tin of Bohemian Scandel with an asking price of $660.00, while Pipestud has a similar tin and he's asking $145. Guess which one is not likely to sell?
