Thanks guys - rec'd her, cleaned her, and smoked her - all good. Pipe arrived in excellent shape. The band definitely seems like an after thought, but doesn't seem to be a shank repair.
Wilke pipes have also intrigued me. I love anything with a history of NYC
+1 Hope you find one.
Have you picked up a Bertram yet? If not check this out they definitely deserve a place in any American Classics collection.
Thanks lifeon - great to know and excellent read - much appreciated.

six, how does it smoke compared to your Dunhills or L'Anatra? Does it smoke as cool and dry? I have an old Peretti straight grain that is a superb smoker that I paid maybe 50 bucks for years ago. Those are also a pipe you might want to keep an eye open for.

Thanks Harris - good to know.
I've only smoked the Wilke once so far, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I would say it's not quite as good, but without question, more than good enough.
My Dunhills (esp my birth year and my ODB) have exceptionally light and dry briar, delivering exceptional smokes. My Dunhill Bing, which I enjoy very much, has much thinner walls and the briar is not as light as the others (read: more dense), so it's more on par with my other -still excellent- pipes.

Congrats on that pipe. Hope it will blossom to one of your favorites
You mentioned Grabows. For some reason I assumed they were drugstore type pipes. Am I incorrect?

Thanks guys for the well wishes, very pleased with this purchase.

Yes, but older ones are excellent smokers. I have one from the late 60s early 70s that smokes extremely well but is a bit low-end in terms of quality construction (but functions fine) and another from the 1940s that's smokes well and is very well made too.
They are hidden gems - however, personally I'm avoiding any Grabows made later than the 70s.

Well thanks a lot six. You spent my money again. You made me want a Wilke and I just got the one from pipestud. Now for the long wait.

Those are great smokes as you've been told and know firsthand. I was in their store the week before they closed and they had about 30 pipes in the showcase they just wanted to clear out for $50. Each. Only if I knew what they would bring today, I should have bought a bunch of them. Hindsight sucks!! LOL

That's pretty cool you were there - but what a shame you didn't get one!

Great pipe! Fond of E. Wilke pipes I own 10. If I am not mistaken some were made by Weber and GBD and then stamped E. Wilke, Carole is my tobacconista very fond of her aromatics. Well enjoy it in good health! :puffy:

Elliot has one in his shop, gorgeous Bent for $195. Watching it for a month and a half just can't muster up enough cajones! GF wants a tennis bracelet! :worship:
