Our featured guest on tonight's Pipes Magazine Radio Show is with Jon David Cole. JD is the Owner/Tobacconist at The Country Squire in Jackson, MS, and the accompanying online store. We’ll have JD and Brian talking about Jon David’s personal pipe collection, sales trends for pipes and tobacco at the shop, and the challenges presented by the pending closure of Sutliff Tobacco. They have been the supplier of many component tobaccos for several of The Country Squire’s house blends. If you haven’t heard the news from earlier this year – Scandinavian Tobacco Group bought Mac Baren, which owned Sutliff. Internal documents were leaked from STG showing that they will be shutting down Sutliff completely, and eliminating most of the products. This will be an extended conversation, so we will skip the usual Pipe Parts opening segment.

The show airs every Tuesday at 8:00pm eastern US time, and can be found at PipesMagazine.com and all podcast apps.

Thanks for another great show.

Jon David seems like he is well prepared to deal with the latest rogue wave to hit the tobacco business. There was a maturity in his words that reflect someone who will be be in it for the long haul.

I couldn’t agree more with your rant. The best time for self improvement is always now.

Happy new year and may 2025 bring you and yours happiness.

Real quick back to the Jeff Gracik episode, I agree with a lot of what you said. I look for shapes, finishes, stems that I like and then ask fellow collectors if they have a piece from the carver and if so how they feel about it. I like to clench, so I focus on button work and weight a lot. Once I have a bowl with the pipe I’ll let the carver know how it went. If I really like the pipe I’m sure to tell other collectors to look out for pieces from the carver.

Glad to hear Jon David and Quinn are on top of things sourcing new leaf for their fantastic blends.

It’s funny how tastes change, like Jon David now having some more colorful stem pieces in his collection. That’s one thing that’s fun about this hobby though, you can trade out pipes that are no longer your thing for pipes you’re now interested in.

I agree with Jon David, part of the reason I like artisan pipes is because I typically buy them in person from the carver at the Las Vegas International Pipe Show, so I get to know the carver as a person more and it makes the pipe more special.

My New Year’s Resolution is to not make a New Year’s Resolution.

Happy New Year Brian, may it bring many good smokes and memories!
