JJ Fox or Peterson pipe Non filter

Tomorrow I am going to JJ Fox London and buying one of their cheapest pipes. They have their own for £35 and a Peterson pipe Non filter for £85. Isn't it a negative not to have a filter? Isn't it better to go with pipe that can accommodate filter then not use it if you want?

Should I really spend £50 for a Peterson? What are the advantages and disadvantages please.

Have you been smoking a pipe for years or are you new. To me filters are quite simply something that helps people from getting tongue bit, i only think this because that's how it was for me when i first started, it really helped. Now i have a couple filtered pipes but since learning "how to smoke, how to dry my tobacco and how to load the bowl they ways that all work for me" I tend to smoke non-filtered pipes more but i still do sometimes reach for a filtered pipe.

You don't have to use a filter wth a filter pipe, many come with or you can by a cheap plastic little adapter that reduces air flow, but a lot of people prefer the huge wide open draft hole, again it's personal preference.

You will not prefer biting your tongue, unless you like a physically burnt tongue that's very painful and can take days to heal, let's just say it will hurt to even drink water LOL Tongue bite is when you smoke a pipe and the smoke is more of a fine stream of steam that hits your tongue as you smoke, there are other causes as well, but for most that's the biggest issue, why filters will help with that they block that stream.

The biggest thing is to dry your pipe tobacco, usually more than you think you need to dry it and loading the bowl properly, usually less than you think you need, you don't want to pack the bowl full and tight. There are lots of tips and threads in the beginner section.

Depends on where you are, most pipe shops will sell pipe tobacco, cigar shops, etc., maybe not tons of kinds, but something, also there is online shopping which is what most of us do.

One of my favorite pipes is a Paykoc meer i paid under $20 for on eBay, price doesn't always mean value, there are many variables, you are a new smoker, spend the 35 and make sure pipe smoking is even something you will be into before investing more money. Many of us started out with Missouri Meerschaum corn cob pipes that go for around 13USD and are literally just corn cob pipes and many people still smoke them, i have like 5 I've gotten over the years and they are a good cheap pipe that if it get's banged around it doesn't matter.

The filter is closer to the bowl at the far end of the stem, if you drool that much into a pipe it won't matter what kind of pipe you get you've got problems LOL

I'm sure you will get lots of different advice these are just things that have worked for me and very few people here will bother reading my post before commenting anyway. LOL

You don't suck on a pipe. You gently sip the smoke into your mouth almost passively. Some people use filter to more or less lessen the beginner experiences. If your saliva blocks the pipe, there's something wrong with that pipe. Some people do smoke wet, but it shouldn't block the draught. If it gets too wet, you can clean it out with pipe cleaner. Unlike smoking cigs or cigar, you really don't want strong stream of pipe tobacco smoke hitting your tongue. That will cause tongue bite which will be definitely uncomfortable.

Should I really spend £50 for a Peterson? What are the advantages and disadvantages please.

The James Fox pipes from Dunhill workshop look perfect for me, if I wished to buy a very first pipe. If a filter chamber is included the better. You can choose and experiment with filtered smoke or just smoke it without filter as well to find out what you prefer. It’s just a thing of personal taste, not only for beginners.

I would choose a straight rustic billiard, but that’s my own guess.

As you will be able to physically inspect and fondle the pipes before purchasing, do so. Ask the counterperson who makes their branded pipes. Then make your decision. It's been a while since I've bee to the islands but, when last there, some stores kept a few blends on hand, hidden away with the cigarettes. All you can do is to inquire.

Some smokers prefer filters, others not so much. I prefer no filter and wouldn't purchase a filtered pipe. That is simply a personal choice based on my experiences. I consider filters one simply as another complication and, I prefer to keep my pipe smoking as simple as possible. My advice is to follow your instincts, make your choices and change them if feedback says to. The pipe is, for me, a very personal tool which I use in as simple a manner as possible. Some like the experience to be full of closely followed routines. Others prefer the simple enjoyment of stuffing and puffing. This is not to denigrate the importance of the pipe with regard to eye appeal, fit and finish.

So, inspect the two pipes and any others on disp0lay which catch your eye, fork over the poneys and go see if the pipe is a good smoker. Enjoy search and the end result where possible.

Despite supermarkets stocking pipe tobacco, a lot of the younger staff won’t know what it is, without you mentioning the brand. Go back to Tesco & ask for a pouch of St. Bruno or Condor & you’ll be fine.

I only buy pipes I have physically fondled and inspected. So, no thoughts about it at all. If Fox has a very liberal return policy ... it might be worth a try. The shape is nice but, a photo is only a photo. The ultimate proof, obviously, will be in the smoking.

Hell of a lot more than i would pay to jump into a hobby I wasn't sure i was going to stay in. Again, i would go with something decent but on the cheap side just to figure it out out.

I’d recommend getting filterless and learning to smoke without a filter. If not, it’s pretty easy to become reliant on smoking with filters (from my own personal experience). It’s just another unnecessary thing to carry around and spend money on.

Absolutely
It will give a wide open draw
Some like that, some not so much
You can get filter adapters that you insert into the stem if you don’t want to use the filter but find the draw is too open
Try it both ways and determine what suits you

You’re lucky you can eyeball and handle the pipes pre-purchase

You get a better idea doing that than getting a pig-in-a-poke when buying online or from EBay with only photos as a guide

Do chat with the guy behind the counter and benefit from his experience (assuming he is not just interested in selling you the most expensive item he has on offer)

The more expensive pipe is NOT necessarily the better one.
I have pipes costing $25 - 50 that are as good looking and smoke as well as ones costing several times that
