I am so glad I paid attention to the old guys around here and bought a lot more than I wished to have "now".
Doing that for the last 3-4 years has made a big difference for my future self; both for what I have, as well as the cost I incurred.
Buy now, smoke later. It's so true.

I had purchased a few pouches of St. Burno ready rubbed and instantly fell in love. Fantastic piping experience, on my top three blends. But, I purchased a few pouches recently and, upon opening and piping thought I had a cold - - everything was muted. Really wish I could order somewhere and grab a dozen or so pouches of the good old stuff. Unless, of course, I happened to grab an 'off' pouch. Ideas? Solutions?

I just tried the new St Bruno RR and likewise was disappointed and won't buy it again along with Mac Baren Scottish Mixture. Try to find something in the Gawith & Hoggarth range to suit your taste.

Any recommendations?
Ennerdale is very popular. It is a more floral aromatic but it does seem to have bergamot similar to St Bruno. A predominately virginia flake with no dark fired leaf. Bonson Cut Plug is an aromatic blend virginia and dark fired leaf blend with clove and spice like elements. Most of G&H blends have a characteristic spice note from their general conditioning and processing I think even if a blend is not labeled aromatic.

Let it age…. It may gain some properties. I opened a new fresh fresh one with under a month of age on it. Total disappointment. I got a few newer one I will lets sit and rest for a bit in the tins. They got to be better aged than fresh. Buy now, smoke later.

I reasoned as much and considered buying a couple more tins of Scottish Mixture to see how they are in three and five years. On the other hand, I don't think the aromatic qualities of St, Bruno will improve.

I can't believe they fucked St Bruno up. As some have already recommended, I think I'll get some and cellar it. Hopefully the sales take a big hit because then STG might look into it and try and improve the recipe.

Have you tried any of the newer stocked St Bruno?

Jim gave Mac Baren Navy Flake 4 stars out of 4, and the STG NF 1/4. Ouch!

MBNF was the second blend I ever smoked, and it’s been a favorite of mine ever since. Even though I love MBNF and Vanilla Cream Flake, Mac Baren blends (including those favorites) had never been a focus of my cellaring because I always assumed Mac Baren would be around a long time; WRONG. Through pure coincidence, the time when I had gotten my cellar to a point where I felt comfortable for the foreseeable future was about a year or so before the STG news was announced. During that time, I padded out some blends I knew I should have a bit more of, and the Mac B blends were among them. Even though I was already in a good spot, I padded them a bit more right after the news came down. A world without the original Navy Flake available to me would be pretty grim.

I'm glad that I stocked up on Navy Flake over ten years ago. When I whittle down my open stash a little, I'll break open a tin from the 1990s.

Yes, it's nowhere nearly as good as the older St. Bruno. I didn't realize the change in ownership when trying the newly stocked but knew something had changed by the loss of fragrance and flavor.

Speaking of which, anyone know where I might find the "older" St. Bruno, pre-acquisition? Anyone have some they might be willing to discuss privately?

Smoking some HH Old Dark Fired right now. There are no replacements for ODF, or HH Bold Kentucky. Musing on what blends might fall within the same family. G&H black twist or brown bogie are in the right ballpark, but these are dark fired or stoved Virginias. Not bad at all... just different.
