What I appreciate about Jim's reviews is their honest objectivity. He reviews blends on their own merits (or demerits), not based on his own personal biases. Jim brinks his wealth of experience and excellent writing artistry to bear on the product itself, and doesn't wax poetic and profane about his own likes and dislikes.
EDIT: When I first tried the two new War Horse bars up at the P&C HQ, they walloped me good. Dan Chlebove had to run and get me some crackers and water while I waited for the room to stop spinning.

When the first tins hit, we had Dan Johnson and John (the CEO of Standard Tobacco Company of Pennsylvania) in to sample the final versions, along with myself, Dan Chlebove and Kevin from the P&C staff. The people who normally enjoy the more heady stuff (Dan C., John and myself) found them satisfying, while the folks who usually go a little lighter found them to be the stuff of hiccups, but still very enjoyable.

Hi Russ. I'm guessing the 221 Baker's Street blend to be similar as far as a good, strong blend, although I'm guessing not as strong as the Warhorse, but is there a different top note on this one, or does it come without a dressing?

I was enjoying the War Horse so much that I powered through that bowl, eager to get to the War Horse Green. I learned my lesson: These are not blends for freight training. These are blends for sitting back and enjoying. Rich and smooth, with some serious gonads...like a certain horse....

Well I opened my tin of the War Horse Green first production. While I am not as experienced nor do I have the pallet that JimInks has, I will give my impression.
This stuff kicks _ss. I have smoked cigars in the medium range for years and enjoy a full cigar on occasion and this blend is clearly in the full range. I did have a full meal before trying this. The tin note is clearly strong in the licorice category and the nic hit was good. Kinda reminds me of an after dinner drink, maybe Pernod. There is a floral and perfume note. I have gotten into Condor of late and while not a favorite yet, it is growing on me. This is much stronger than that and while I would not smoke this all the time, when I want a good rich full smoke, this is the ticket. I will be buying more.

As I've stated many times, when I read a Jiminks review, I know what the tobacco will taste like, and whether it will suit my palate or not. From Jim's review of these two blends, I can tell right off the bat that these are going to be way too strong for me, and Russ's observations only serve to confirm the fact. While I"m certain that these are fine tobaccos, they're definitely not for me. But that's not the point; the really sad part of all this is that this is Russ's swan song as one of our age's great blenders. With the FDA regulations, Russ will no longer be devoting his creative skills to exploring the world of new tobaccos, and we pipe smokers are the losers. It's a sad commentary on our age, and a governmental agency's foray into a field about which they know little, but can exert great control. O tempora, o mores!

221B Baker Street is on the full side of medium and is made of Virginia and Burley. It has a creamy kind of top note, but the flavor is more natural than anything else. It's a fairly potent tobacco, maybe a little lighter than Royal Yacht.

Last night I had my first bowl of War Horse and had no spins, no problems. With all the previous warnings, I made sure to sip s l o w l y. Good stuff.

Pure luck and timing. I think P&C got just a small order in, on the 5th, and that was so they could say they had it before the cutoff on the 8th. I happened to catch the thread Simon started that showed pics of the tins, just one minute after it went up. I went to P&C right away and it showed in stock. I ordered ten, checked out, and had a conformation email that showed it in stock. Then I went back to P&C and it was out of stock. I got ten tins delivered last week, but didn't open any until last night. The coolest thing is the labels show 1.75 oz. The correct amount is supposed to be 2 oz. when the main batches start coming out, according to Jiminks, in late Sept.
