Brilliant set of reviews Jim, and of a blender we don't see at all in England. The RYO/pipe debate also doesn't seem to be a factor over here, so it will be interesting to experience a blend that some think falls into that category. Rimboche S.J. sounds like manna, so it's on the list and will be in my next order!

Glad to help, Andy. If you order from Smoking Pipes, try VIP, too.
Off topic: knowing you like rum blends, try Rotary Navy Cut if you haven't already. P&C doesn't sell it, but Smoking Pipes does.

D&R makes some really nice tobaccos. I buy a pound of Ryback every month or so, mostly for rolling, but it is fine in the pipe as well. Because it burns easily, and I guess for lack of a better word, comprehensively, I've found it good for breaking in pipes as well. I enjoy most halfzwares, but often the added flavoring is a bit strong in other blends, whereas the Ryback seems like pure KY and VA.
The prices on their bagged tobaccos are an outstanding value.

D&R Picayune:

The flue cured gold leaf offers some citrus and grass/hay as the base of the blend, though it’s sublimated by the other tobaccos. The dry, woody, smoky, nutty, earthy lightly peppery dark fired burley melds with the spicy, raisin and fig perique, and the floral, dry, woody, earthy mildly sour, vegetative cigar-like Samsun to create a full bodied, well blended product that can be smoked straight by experienced smokers as well as being used as a mixer. The nic-hit is just above medium. The strength and taste are nearly full. Won’t bite, but may get a little harsh and cigarette-like if puffed fast. It’s dry and benefits from a little hydration. Being a virtual shag cut, it burns quickly with a very clean, consistent flavor. Leaves no moisture in the bowl, and hardly needs a relight. The strong after taste and room notes will linger. Not an all day smoke, and not for the novice. I suggest a small bowl if you smoke it straight.

Jim, whats the strongest tobacco you've ever smoked? Curious because of your rating picayune as "just above medium"-- everyone is different in the nic department (not questioning your verdict), but I found it up there amongst the strongest I've ever smoked!

Aguineapig: I did notice everybody else thought it was stronger than I did. I imagine it was because they smoked the stuff in a bigger bowl. I used a group one. It is strong, but I've had stronger, so I rated the strength level against other blends. I've had several G&H and Sam Gawith ropes and twists that were stronger, like Black Irish XX Twist, Black Pigtail, and Brown Irish X. War Horse Bar is very potent, too. I would say that Picayune smoked straight is not for the timid, and I won't quibble with anybody rating it stronger than I did. It just depends on how you rate strength in blends.
If I hadn't had stronger blends, I would have rated Picayune as very strong.

I think I made it about half way through my first bowl in a tiny Jeantet prince, but I am quite a lightweight. Have not tried any of the ropes, but I have had G&H dark plug, which I thought was about on par with Picayune, or slightly lower nic. Interesting stuff and so variable!

Well, you have me thinking that I should probably up the strength rating. I'll smoke another bowl and give it some thought.
