An update. I have smoked this pipe maybe 30 times in the last 2 months. It is as good as anything I have and better than most.
Without naming names or singeling out other makers I think Ryan Alden is the best bang for your buck on a new pipe.

Beautiful pipe! I love spalted maple on a pipe. I have two and can look at them for hours.

I would imagine that the one with horn looks 'better' in real life. The contrast isn't as obvious in the picture between horn and stem.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ryan at the NASPC show last week, great guy to talk to and he's a dog person - bonus. About that modified prince shape over a pit in the chamber, I've seen Ryan's definition of pit and I can assure you that any pipe you get from him will approach perfection.
Saving my $ so I can acquire an Alden in the future.
