On the same day my son's school announces they are cutting the music program next year.
Sad indeed. :(

Yes, sad indeed. I feel like it was just last week that Joe Morello passed. My professor in Undergrad was one of his students.

I caught the news yesterday on the web and felt deflated and very sad.
Driving home from work late last night NPR, in a classy move for them, replayed a 1997 broadcast of Piano Jazz with Ms. McPartland hosting the incomparable Dave Brubeck. It was wonderful and together they played a poignant piece of the mass he wrote for the citizenry of Oklahoma City after the Murrah Building was destroyed.
The man who wrote Blue Rondo a la Turk, Take Five, Unquare Dance and Brandenburg Gate is gone. But I am so grateful for the legacy of wonderful music he left behind.

Yeah, I saw this. My first Jazz album was Time Out, and loved them ever since. Take Five is a favorite cut and is timeless. His kind are hard to come by and will be missed.
