I found this decent looking James Upshall P-Grade XL bent billiard last week. Near teh end of the auction I was surprised when bidding stalled well below $100 and I won it. Thinking I already had a Upshall P-grade billiard, I figured that I could probably make a few bucks by polishing it up and reselling.
The pipe was delivered today and I was surprised to find it in such good condition. The stem is unmarked and no brown oxidation was present, just faded in color. The bowl has no blemishes or marks and the stamping is immaculate. I like my stems shiny and this one didn't take much work. I used the final three grades of micromesh with some oxy-clean solution (4000, 6000, 8000 and 12000 grit). I than buffed it on a cloth wheel with some Blue Magic plastic polish. It gleams now and the log is perfect. I am sold on the non-padded micromesh sheets (6" x 2" size).
The bowl didn't need much work either. I gave it a light reaming and than buffed it first with white rouge than with carnuba. A final hand polish with Paragon was used on the bowl and stem. The bowl is now soaking, filled with some Everclear and sea salt.
The pipe is unique enough in stain and shape that I'm keeping it. The thing that I most pleased with is the size. Even though it is stamped XL, it is smaller in all dimensions than my first P. It is far lighter at 50 grams compared to 75 grams. That is my perfect weight and it fits easily in my travel bag, where the other P just does not. I just recently learned that early Upshalls were only stamped for grade, not size, so that explains the difference between the two.
The shank took some cleaning with Everclear and about a dozen cleaners, using both ends and twisted together in the middle. That diligence paid off and when I smoked it this evening, it smoked clean with no ghosts. The draw is Upshall perfect. This will make a fine companion to my other P and I'll have to clear some rack room for the new baby.
Here's some before pix:

And finished:

And a shot with both P grades. The XL is significantly smaller.

Uphall are excellent pipes , i Have several of them. There's a lot of confusion about their prices as Mr Ezrati sells his pipes directly from his site.He sells estates of his brand 8O .Think nobody now will continue to buy JU pipes new in shops and probably no shop whould like to sell them in future as new because i guess are very very difficult to sell if not of E grade due to the default of the internet prices
Here are some of mine two B grades two P grades one S grade and an Astley on extreme left

Wow, a nice set Pentangle. I've admired a few Lovats on the ebay site but don't yet have that shape.

That is a curious practice Mr. Ezrati has, only selling on Ebay.

I tend to see a lot of P-grade pipes, but the only S-Grade I've seen is the Rhodesian estate I purchased.

I'd like to eventually add one of their Bark finish pipes.

The fourth from left it's a B grade long canadian xl with sterling silver that had a price when new of 1160 pounds about 1798 $ 8O I bough mine smoked ( or just smoked one time to sell as smoked? :?: ) from Mr Mordecay Ezrati for if i right remeber less than 300 pounds, about 450 dollars. So Now what could be the real price as new in a shop? 1160? Think not

The curious thing is most shops, even online don't sell new Upshalls. Pipes and Cigars has one, P grade for sale at the moment. Mr. Ezrati seems to compete with himself in this regard, selling and estate Upshalls are greatly reduced prices. I emailed him on some info on my S-grade Rhodesian, and he sent me back a very helpful reply (he suggested it was carved by Barry Jones in the early 90's, due to the stamping style/font).

Upshall company (mr Ezrati) probably needed money as selling pipes isn't easy nowadays, so now sells semi-estates and new od stock from his own site.At the start i'm sure it's a good idea and he's getting some money. But lately that could be a problem for the brand, a default could be rear the corner

Oho, thank you pentangle.

I had it my mind that James Upshall was the carver rather than a brand name. Hadn't bothered to look into it until now.
So many branches in this tree of the pipe we relish so (-:

The master carver of Upshall is Barry Jones who made fine pipes for Charatan.Barry is a legend as Bill Ashton Taylor (sadly passed away on 2009)

Wow, this G-grade just brought $300. I was watching a similar G last week, it didn't break $200.

And, it has a replacement stem, I think someone made a bad bid....

not sure if stem has been replaced, this one is in the Upshall style, maybe simply buffed.300 $ converted in euro currency isn't a bad price at all
