Jam Jar Storage Question -> Newbie Storage

Hello people,

I appreciate all of the information being shared around as well as the love people give for pipe smoking!

I was searching the forum but was unable to find any information in regards to these types of jars.

Specifically, the jars that have a cap like this:

My country does not have mason jars and buying them online would be too expensive at the moment, so I was wondering if buying glass jars of around 277ml = 9.37 oz would be enough to store around 2 oz ~ 50g of tobacco.

I was wondering if buying stretch foil and covering the top once the tobacco had been placed in the jar, before closing the lid, would be good for additional security. The stretch foil I'm referring to:

If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd gladly appreciate them as well as the jar size for something above 50g, let's say 100-150g.

The glass jars and caps would of course be new, not previously reused jars.

I can't comment on jam jars specifically, however many (including me) use mylar bags for long term storage. In some ways they are better than jars less heavier and less volume. If you go this route I recommend heat sealing the bag, don't rely only on the "ziplock" seal.

What you propose would probably work... For a while.

It's not a long term solution. The stretch foil would distort when you screwed the cap on, so there's really no point to putting it there in the first place.

I am looking for something that would hold tobacco for a few months, given that I don't usually order more than 8 oz at a time. Do you have any other proposition besides mylar bags or mason jars that I might look into?

I would imagine that for a few months a jam jar would be fine,it might dry out a touch but you are not looking to cellar for 5-10 years

Airtight Tupperware might be ok for a few months or just those jars and maybe one of the ceramic humidity buttons for protection against the unknown?

So technically, something like this might hold the moisture for a few months?

I am looking at possible options in my country and they are not good haha.

Would something like this from IKEA work perhaps?

These have rubber and a 4 point snapping system that looks like it's not gonna leak any additional air into the container.

Has anyone had any experience with these? I would assume adding an additional layer of stretch foil might help as these would not distort the foil as they are not with a twist-mechanism.

I've used jam jars with regular screw-on lids for short term storage, and they seem satisfactory. With something like 1Q, it doesn't matter; the stuff stays moist if not fresh for years ... and years. You could play around adding a layer of plastic wrap, or whatever, to get a better seal, but it's all temporary.

I have recycled jam jars with lids like that and used for tobacco before. They seemed to be okay for a month or two, but I would not recommend them for much longer. New lids may provide better results though since the ones I was using were previously pressure sealed and likely changed their seeking ability after opening.

For longer term storage, good plasticware with rubber seals like the ones you posted would likely work. A humidifier pack could also be added, if necessary. People use the same kind of setup for cigar "Tupperdors" regular with good results.

Those are unlikely to be effective since those appear to only me paper "seals." May be better if rubber or silicone seals were an option.

Some people like to use glass jars with bale lids with seals:


The reason why "Mason" jars are more popular is that they are usually much more cost effective than the above jars.

I'll most likely get the IKEA 4 snap cover glass containers I've posted above as they seem as the only ones that will properly hold moisture.

I'll buy around 8 and see how they behave. I'll update the thread once I see some results.

In the meantime if anyone else wants to contribute with their experience, I'll be more than happy to take those into consideration as well.

I'll also try looking for some jars that resemble Mason one's, though I doubt they'll have the same rubber mechanism as the Ball ones.

If I pick the zip backs for travel storage, do you guys have any specific brand I should go for, or can they be just generic zip bags with stronger walls/plating?, compared to the bulk tobacco ones you receive them in (the transparent ones)?

Thicker walled ones should be fine; helps prevent air and cross contamination.

"Le Parfait" jar 350g is enough for 50g tobacco​

until the rubber seal is broken and depend if you keep open and close it

you can always re-moisturize tobacco if it dry out or not at ideal moisture
