So after buying Motzek Strang from a guy he included a sample of it along with a BAG of a bunch of other Virginia blends I had never tried. I’m talking Germain’s Brown Flake with crystals, McClelland 2015, and other aged, rare stuff. I kept a list of notes as I sampled through some of the stuff. I can’t give you specifics since it’s been about a year, but I remember liking it a lot and wrote it down amongst my favorites that I wanted to stock from that sample bag. Here is what I wrote:
Boswell Private Stock Virginia - This is a really smooth yet rich Virginia. I would definitely stock this stuff and smoke away. Nice.
Here is my list of blends I really liked from that sample bag he gave me:
Patriot Flake
Boswell’s Private Stock
Ayelsbury Sir John’s Flake
Germain’s Brown Flake
Wessex Red Flake
Yupper, it’s an okay blend to me, nothing really jumps out to me. Though, I guess I should thank my lucky stars that they have a house blend I can actually enjoy, as almost every Aro blend and every single Lat blend makes me want to slam my head into a concrete wall. I’ve heard stories from Archie at their Chambersburg location about this particular blend though, and people are/were apparently pretty nuts about the stuff. They blend it and age it for 6 months beforehand, and originally, back when it wasn’t a government-registered blend, rather an “under-the-table” blend, it was simply known as “No Name”. They only made a pound at a time, but, some people were always looking to buy the whole pound, almost like a competition. They make it in bigger batches now, probably around 10 lbs. per go, but, yeah. To my personal tastes, it’s okay. Though, I’ll go check, I’ve some cellared, I’ll get back to you.
So, at the end of the day, in my opinion, it’s good.
I sensed a topping, but, if there is one, its light, reminds me of a toned down version of MB’s London Burley Blend in essence. It has that familiar mix of chocolate-dominant, light-vanilla flavor, that smells a bit of chocolate milk mix, or perhaps chocolate cake mix. Tastes just a touch artificial to me, but, it’s honestly the least artificial tasting weed which totes such a topping that I’ve ever had, if the topping exists. Either way, a lightly chocolate-topped VaPer sounds great, so, if this is that, it’s as good as any on the market. Smooth, and different in its own way, which is always welcomed. Nicely sweet and sour. My issues with it is that out of the bag, it’s not that good. “Fresh”, it’s sorta non-descript, meh, middle of the road, tastes like what one might get from smoking fresh LBF, that basic meat-and-potato tasting smoke. Jarred with a few months, then we are getting somewhere.
That’s really the only problem I have with it, and maybe it sticks out to me as much as it does because it’s purportedly aged, yet, I wouldn’t smoke this stuff without waiting a good few months. That, and it’s $111 a pound online, shipping and taxes included within the same state. I note online pricing as I don’t know if they’d have pounds of the stuff on hand to buy at their location at Chambersburg, PA.
I’ve generally very little in my cellaring coffers, and I don’t wish to empty them for a blend that I’ll get less of in comparison to other blends I like more that are more affordable. Even more-so the fact that I’d also have to sit on it for months for it to be good.
My deeper-cellared blends come in at most at around $60-$70 a pound, and they are ready to be enjoyed right away, and it’s not that I lack patience, I just like the option to enjoy it before I throw it deep into the cellaring pit. I’d love if I could throw a few pounds in the cellar, but, buying in bulk doesn’t cheapen it a bit, and I could never justify the purchase for the price. It’s good, but, to me, not that good. I might pick up an ounce or two each time I stop by the shop and be a tad sad I can’t go ham on cellaring it, but at the end of the day, I’ll gladly pay the bit extra if it keeps the lights on at Boswell’s. I’d rate it a 5/10 fresh, 6.8/10 with a bit more age. I’d bet it cellars nicely.
