Can't Leave
Excerpted:

Behind the counter was Douglas Czajkowski, Iwan Ries’s resident pipe expert. Czajkowski keeps a rack of a dozen pipes at work, and often smokes on the job. In his red jacket, with a paisley pocket square, he looked and acted like a magician as he laid out pipes for Darge. He even had his own patter, telling tales from the smoking life.

That was a lovely piece. And I'll admit to falling for Douglas's fine patter and purchasing a pipe from him when I went in without intending to buy one that day. It is a lovely-looking pipe, though I haven't had a great smoke out of it yet (a Briarworks C12 that has a bit of a gurgle no matter what I smoke in it). No regrets, though, and I look forward to my next visit!

“When Darge had picked out two pipes, Czajkowski showed him how to pack it — tight on the bottom, loose on top: “that’s your kindling.”

Hmm? I‘ve sort of done the opposite: looser at the bottom, firmer and tighter at the top. Anyone else?
