I always exercise a degree of caution along with huge respect for moose, especially during the "rut". Especially dumbass cheechakos have inurred to humans by feeding them from their porch. Well, some sourdoughs do it too. Obviously they've not been prusued by a bull moose while wearing newspaper bags front and rear. It's amazing how easy one can fit under a car when terrified.

Once I got caught trespassing on a bull moose’s state highway in my Toyota Land Cruiser. I was busted red handed, just blatantly driving my truck on road where I had no right to be (despite having paid my license and registration fees and taxes and carrying full coverage auto insurance) so I came to an immediate stop a respectful distance away (maybe 8-10 yards - but in my defense I was going about 70 mph when Bullwinkle stepped aggressively in front of me and old Land Cruisers aren’t noted for their nimble braking properties. I was hoping for a warning but Bullwinkle was giving me a hard time notwithstanding the fact my truck outweighed him by at least 3000 pounds. Eventually he shooed me away but he wasn’t happy about trucks on his state highway and let me know about it. That damn moose was crazy.

Used to be 10 or so killed in town by vehicles every year. But I swear to God, I saw a moose, a couple of years ago, in an area with two, three kills a year, approach the roadway at the foot of a hill, and look both ways, holding until a car passed, and then cross the road.

If you're ever in the northwest corner of British Columbia, beware the bison. They're more cantankerous than a bull moose during the rut. And, they'll not back down to vehicle. Moose usually will after a bit of a stare down. A bison might simply put his massive head don and charge.

There's a game reservation near the coast that we used to go camping. Full troop with young 'uns. We did morning lesson on first aid and went to watch some birds. One of the senior ASM acted like he was having heart attack. Nobody noticed, but one of the new kid found something smelly. Bear scat. Huge pile and wasn't too old. Decided to turn around and a full size alligator staring at us. Had to stop a kid who wanted to pet the alligator. Thankfully, everyone came out without any damage. NC can be exciting.

The great outdoors can get very exciting in the blink of an eye.

It's called bear "scat" because, you should scat when it's fresh. That's what I was told when a youngster. Strange what sticks with you over the years. M7 wife, rest her soul, laughed when i told her that. She laughed less every year when I related it whenever we came across fresh "bear sign."

Even full-on grizzle bars know who's boss:

A great observable lesson in this video is how fast those big bears can run. There is no chance that a human can outrun them even with a head start. One of the biggest mistakes that people make when confronted by bears and other predatory animals is to run.

Elk, and even deer, can do a lot of damage too and they absolutely will pursue and attack you under certain circumstances. They are more likely to cause you harm while driving though. We have both deer and elk in here on the Oregon coast, and my neighborhood is especially highly populated with deer due to people feeding them. A day doesn't go by that I don't see a deer while driving, and I've seen a whole herd of them, including a few big bucks, on many occasions. Last year driving home from a gig I had a little buck jump over my car, hooves clattering on my windshield. Fortunately no damage was done to my car or the buck.

Several years ago a bread delivery driver here was driving back to Eugene from the coast on the two lane highway when a driver going the opposite direction hit a deer. The impact launched the deer through the windshield of the bread truck and directly into the driver, who managed to pull off the road before succumbing to his injuries.

I've seen a few wild animals do that as well as cats. Now if you saw a deer do that I'd think you were crazy but a moose I have no issue take your word on it.
The weirdest thing I've seen deer do is watch me get chased down a hill by the yellow jackets I pissed off. They looked confused. They kept sniffing in my direction and making faces I didn't know they could make.

Worst thing with a deer that happened here. Some idiot tried to get a pet one and raised a fawn. It had to be killed but it attacked a few people and put them in the hospital. And it was during mating season and it was acting treating people like a rival male. Poor thing didn't last long. I don't mind deer dying and being hunted but the fact that this one died in such a stupid way because of human ignorance and stupidity just sits wrong.

The Alaskan highway right of ways a three hundred yards or, so wide. I watched a brown bear traverse that distance in less time than it takes to read this sentence. They are incredibly fast! The front feet pu;; it forward, pulling hard. The back feet? The push it forward with hellious force. It was fascinating to see. Must have covered ten yards with every bound.
