Most pipes so named are just cashing in the LOTR popularity. The rest are just ignorant. Your rant is a good way to vent so sic' 'em Cyndi, sic' 'em

Wait, Churchwardens existed before that lame Trilogy. Shocking. What's more annoying to me than people calling them names after LotR is the fact they're LotR nerds and only smoke a pipe because of those movies. Everybody knows Star Wars is the greatest Trilogy. LOL
Of course that's just my opinion. I never could get into the LotR.

I'm not a LOTR nerd, BUT I do call my Churchwarden a Gandalf or Wizzard. Why? Because if I ask my gal or her children to go get my Churchwarden that look at me and say "Huh?"
