i meant to post this awhile ago. I've never heard of this guy before, nor have i ever really cared much for Christmas songs, but this song by a guy Tim Minchin is one of the most brilliantly written songs i've ever heard. Its both sentimental, catchy, sad, happy....its just a terrific song. if you've never heard it before PLEASE listen ;)

Didn't know Minchin until now, but I think he's good. He gets back to strong melody and intelligible lyrics without resorting to a bunch of showbiz musical tricks. He puts over a sensible essay in his lyrics and manages to be authentic. Despite his claim of sentimentality, I find the song pretty tough and not sentimental. Sentimentality is unearned emotion, and this seems entirely earned. He's paid up for all of it, it would appear. Thanks for the introduction, Nate. Reminds me of when my sister gave me a Leondard Cohen record for Christmas years ago. This guy's good.

Awesome! Glad you guys dig it also!! It's likely the best Xmas song I've heard. I love unusual, beautifully put together lyrics like that. Great performance as well. He seems like an interesting character, not unlike Leonard Cohen whom I like as well. Everybody Knows was my teen angst anthem after seeing Pump Up The Volume.

He also reminds me somewhat of Randy Newman who relies on lot on lyrics in songs that have a strong component of personal essay.

Such talent, charm and a great voice! A true artist who inside is probably like many such as him, troubled, tortured, introverted in real life, and his music is a way of connecting with the world. Such people often do not end well and celebrity thrust upon him as many who have the ability to connect with others on an emotional level is something unavoidable but nothing welcomed. Yet such talent demands an open expression.

I had a suspicion before clicking the link that this was "White Wine in the Sun." Though from Canada and accustomed to white and cold Christmas's, many of my family and friends are Australian and this sentiment of good company over drinks resonates with me so clearly. I have found that as I've grown older, I've strayed from my religious upbringings (perhaps a lot of it to do with a Religious Studies degree). Yet, I agree with Minchin when he says, "I quite like the songs." Music is the most evocative of the associative stimuli and songs remind me of wonderful Christmas's spent with family. Also, with daughters of my own now, I hope that they will someday, and forever, know that their mother and I will be waiting for them at Christmas.
Thanks for this Nate. Brightened up my day.
