Me too Crash.
I've been smoking a pipe in New York for a year or so and have not had one negative interaction. Quite the opposite, most of the time someone will tell me their father or grandfather smoked a pipe and that will lead on to some wistful reminiscences on their part.
I guess New Yorkers are just some friendly folk.

I smoke fairly large pipes, wear western wear, and it's common knowledge in my area that I'm always carrying a firearm. Not many sideways remarks.
Not me. I smoke my pipe proudly in full view of everyone ... my .45, however, stays concealed and a secret. 8)
Bottom line is that, one should not be so tightassed, when people are simply trying to socialize.
Probably the best advice I've ever been given. Unfortunately, tightassed about socializing is exactly what I am haha.

It doesn't matter what pipe I carry with me on an outing, it could be a MM country gent, a straight billiard, my Sav 626, my Machelli Poker, my Bjarne Viking plateau top freehand ... whatever.

Wouldn't it be funny if you carry a calabash with your next time, and "that doesn't look like a Sherlock Holmes pipe."
