Hello. First post here. I'm sure this has been asked a million times, so I'm sorry for that in advance.

I'm getting back to the pipe smoking hobby after several years and am seeking a few tobaccos to enjoy.

When I was younger I enjoyed the blackest, strongest English/Irish stuff I could find. Now I find I've mellowed a little, and have even been enjoying my girlfriend's aromatics.

I was hoping to find something in between an aromatic and a dark English blend. I tend to like my stuff natural, without added flavors. I like complexity, but not for its own sake. Something sophisticated without trying too hard. Something that would go well with a sunset on the ocean. Something with a bit of an edge, but also something with some sweetness. Bitter-sweet. Yin-yang. Doesn't need to be nicotine-heavy, but some would be nice. And ideally something that might stay on the market for a while.

Pegasus is wonderful stuff. Three Burleys, Two Virginias and a bit of unsweetened cavendish.

On edit. If it’s light Latakia you seek then Presbyterian or Father Dempsey or Early Morning Pipe.

Lighter Latakia with some extra sweetness and complexity, try Edward G Robinson.

A few C&D blends that you can buy in bulk for small samples might interest you. Tuggle Hall is a burley based English that's unique. For stronger, try Stratfordshire and Bayou Night. And for milder I like Mountain Camp, which is Bayou Night in different proportions.

I like Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic, burley based with Virginia as a condiment, flavored with three liqueurs.

I quite like Cornell & Diehl Autumn Evening. It’s an aromatic, but not cloying like some others I’ve tried.

It has a very very subtle maple note while you smoke it. I’d say 90% smell and 10% taste, so it rewards an occasional retrohale, but it still tastes like tobacco.

I’d suggest drying it out a tad before smoking it, same as basically any other aromatic.

If you want a lighter English blend without the aromatics, my favorite so far is Presbyterian Mixture. It’s balanced enough to be an all day smoke but still has enough complexity to feel like a treat.

Nothing stopping you from blending your own mixture! Don't be afraid to mix aromatics with non-aromatics. I've added Latakia to aromatics a number of times with good success. Maybe something like Early Morning Pipe and Bagpipers Dream?

You may be interested in what are called "English Crossover" blends, aka "English Aros."

One such blend is Boswell's Northwoods, but there are others also.

I'll add Sutliff Private Stock Eastfarthing to the mix. Its a mild English blend, and probably the only English I smoke that the wife doesn't completely hate the room note.

It contains no Latakia, but I’ve been really enjoying Mac Baren Mixture: Scottish Blend.

It was listed as an aro, but the aro properties of this blend are quite mild in my opinion.

It has a great balance of flavors, it is truly a mixture where the components work together. Not too strong, not too weak. A little sweet, a little smoky, and I could smoke it every day.

Based upon your description, such a blend doesn't exist. Why don't you just try a few blends from different genres so you can at least start to describe what you like in one or two sentences?

Try not to be put off by how sweet the tin note is on Autumn Evening. It mellows over time, and it’s nowhere near that sweet once it’s actually being smoked.

I find the tin smells like an extra sweet stack of pancakes, which is lovely of course, but if it tasted like that it would be too much. Thankfully it doesn’t!

I think you described Kramers blend for Cary Grant. It literally is a blend that I've described as being both manly and feminine in a perfect blend. That lets you enjoy the smoke and your date enjoy the room note. Oh my only advice to don't talk about enjoying a womans aromatics outside of a pipe forum even if she is your girlfriend. Other people wouldn't understand. Oh actually talk about whatever you want if she's cool with it, but don't think the outsiders will understand.
