I never want the cherry to go fully across the top. You don’t get as much flavor from the actual incineration of the leaf as you do from the heat pushing the oils from surrounding tobacco. Some prefer the full cherry in the pipe, but not everyone.

I don't fold and stuff often because I don’t like to “fiddle” with my pipe much as I smoke. But when I do, I get my best smokes when the pipe and tobacco do exactly as the OP posts.

If you don’t like to use your tamper, then just rub it out. And when you do want a different experience and can tamp, the way the OP describes it is about the best way, IMo.

There’s no one best way that works for everyone. If you enjoyed the flavor, just don’t worry about it pushing down the sides. If you don’t, then experiment. Find what works for you.

I'm a novice also, so don't take my word for it. I smoked hh navy flake the past 2 morning bowls. I ripped 1 flake in 3 pieces, packed them like I pack normal tobacco the evening before to dry them a little and everything burned fine.

Drying tobacco in the chamber has a major drawback: the heel -or say the bottom half- stays damp while the top dries a bit. If there's a differential, you want the bottom drier than the top.

When my pipe goes out around halfway I will gently stir the ash and dump. I then use my tamper to scrape the sides of the inside of the bowl, tamped down gently and relight. I might have to do that one more time, it depends if I was paying attention. I pretty much strictly smoke flakes and fold and stuff everything. That hit after scraping the sides is really very tasty.
Stop the presses. Harris has the correct answer.
100% balls on accurate.

You got the fake stuff.

And there's no way it rubs out in ribbons. They're like wood chips.

Yes that was also my experience with Dark Star back when it was fresh,... very difficult to work with. The old stuff seems to go easier. This latest tin I opened was from 2001 and it was a piece of cake to rub out and smoke (also quite a bit mellower). Sort of miss the struggle puffy

Used all the advice given and just smoked a bowl of flake for around 2.5 hours. Probably a rare smoke seeing as the first 3/4 of the bowl I only had to relite 3 times. Some how I kept it at the verge of going out with just a little stoke as I sipped. I let it sit for about 30 min at the 3/4 point and when I went back to it the flavor was incredible. The aroma it left this time was much stronger also so I’m still enjoying it lol. Thank you for the pointers guys.
