Is this cake starting or is it burning out after 2 smokes?

I agree, it looks normal to me. Looks like there just hasn't been burning tobacco at the bottom yet.

The issue I have hear is that it was black, it had the factory bowl coat on it and that’s gone, it didn’t start out as that color…so have I just burned the factory coat away?

Thanks, yeah. That bare wood color at the bottom. I didn’t know if it was burning through or just took off the bowl coat.

burnout tastes really bad. I've done it too one pipe and it's nasty. It was a cheap pipe that literally was sold with a note saying while it's a working pipe it wasn't intended to be used that way. So.....
