If it was good Kaywoodie and Marxman and Lee would have varnished their pipes.:)

The varnish on the truly abominable 70s Kaywoodies like the one shown were dipped or sprayed with an excellent bowling ball type finish polyurethane.

It just can’t be removed by strippers,

When they sealed up young, cheap briar, it stays that way forever.
I had an image of an exotic dancer sanding varnish off a pipe. It must be late...

I think you are really referring to jus bad briar in general.

If my wife gets better this summer I’d like to go visit Dr Grabow in Sparta North Carolina.

There’s a man there that’s the best briar selector on this planet.

By World War Two,,,,even before,,,,all the mysteries of the selection of briar were solved by the pipe makers.

I’ll bet he can smell bad briar, or at least taste it.

Dr Grabow is the last maker left that makes a thousand pipes each working day,,,,all good ones.
