You're right, those spindles do look a little flimsy... HF has a cheap 3600rpm buffer (39.99) that I might get. It sounds like 3600rpm would work fine as long as you put a 4" wheel on it? The Skil 3380 that stephenoc mentioned is only 40$ as well w amazon prime. I cant really spend more than 100$ on this whole setup so I'll keep shopping around. Thanks

Well, Since I already had a bench grinder (3450 rpm) I just ordered the 4" buff kit from Beall. I have a kaywoodie that I use as a beater pipe and last time I went fishing with it, it got rained on. Rain dont look good on a vucanite stem and hand polishing hasnt worked. The kit will be in this week. Wish me luck. :puffy:

Here's a picture of my setup that I took with my cell phone tonight. You'll notice the three wheels, three bars, grinder, and most importantly the mini-scissors (to clip off stray threads on the fly).

Not to mention the huge tobacco stash underneath!
That looks like a nice simple setup that could probably be had for ~$100 huh? Do you just use red tripoli, white diamond, and caranuba?

@strave19: correct - the whole thing was about $100 (tobacco not included :puffy: ). Regarding the compounds, I rarely use them unless it's for a major restoration job. For the most part I use the carnuba bar & wheel. At first I was thinking of using this setup until I "outgrew" it, and the plan was to upgrade to a more professional rig. However, I have not found a single area of performance and/or results that can be improved with a better setup. So rather than waste the money, I'm sticking with this one.
I would say that this setup has increased the value of my heard by at least $3,000.00! Here's how I get that number. One example is a Savinelli Autograph I bought on eBay a while back that I can easily sell for $250-$300 these days. It's a beautiful size 4 plateau-top freehand that I bought for $50 in true estate condition. The stem was oxidized badly and was pistachio green, the plateau top looked like gunk & cake spilling over the edge, and the exterior had no life to speak of. Well, after some restoration work one of my friends (a professional restorer/seller) said he could easily get $250-$300 on his eBay channel no problem. In fact, the pipe is so beautiful now, I got stopped several times at the Vegas pipe show last year and was given compliments on how attractive that pipe was.
I have multiple (30-40?) stories like this of restored pipes that I bought cheap and "saved" using nothing but the rig you see in the photo above (Ok, maybe a copper wire brush, some Everclear, etc).

Hi Guys ... can't get half the polishing machines that you lucky people can, so I figured I'd buy a super cheap bench grinder here:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/330639839320?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
and I assume these (or other brands) of 4" buffing pads etc will fit on it fine? (hoping the metal sleeve adapter thingie is stanard on most grinders?)
http://www.bealltool.com/products/buffing/buffer.php
Please let me know if this bench grinder is way off the mark and if I'm looking at buying totally the wrong tool.

Trying to figure out why I posted but it didn't go into the current postings on forum front page?
