You might also want to consider artisan pipe makers like Lee Erck and Bob Swanson( Perry White Pipes). Lee has been a pipe smoker for over 50 years.

Well, cigrmaster, I've witnessed yer cellarin' and seen pix of the stuff and I say to myself "...that guys a pro!" !
For real, you got skills in pinpointing whatcha wanna cellar and then go about doin' it, somethin' properlike 'n all, everybodies whinin' there ain't no Stonehaven, meanwhile you're callin' up widespread mom 'n pops allover the whole country gettin' the grail and addin' the lbs!
Not only that, your sleuth work at findin' stuff, but you when you extoll the wonders of a good blend, people tend to listen, that's howcum there ain't no damn'd Wessex Brigade Campaign Dark Flake anywhere easy to find!
And you're completely open with your techniques, lettin' folks know "hey, ifya put in the legwork, you'll eventually find it!"
And spreadin' the gospel about Rad Davis, you're a one-man Superbowl ad!

Which is a good thing in my book, I like seein' such unbridled enthusiasm.
So, your contributions do count, my good man.
And I'd say yer a right damn pro!

Maybe a good way to phrase it would be "a tobacco pipe professional," which would mean a person earns

a substantial part of their living related to tobacco pipes, as opposed to a professional pipe smoker, which

seems like a stretch. Or, if you want to describe people who do not earn their living through this, but know

a great deal about tobacco pipes and tobacco, maybe "a tobacco pipe expert" would do it. However, I'm

not persnickety. If someone wants to say that someone is a real pipe pro, just meaning he loves his pipes

and knows a lot, okay. I'm not going to get red in the face. Some of our great song lyricists and performers

have to be declared "poets" by admiring critics. They're lyrics may not hold up on the page without their

music, but if it makes people happy to call them poets, hey, they're poets. I like precision in language when

I can get it, but I believe usage forms the language, so I'll go with it, if it conveys the intended meaning.

Well mso489, if that be your description, and a fair one it be, look no further than "The Tobacconist University".
http://www.tobacconistuniversity.org/
There is a certificate, and maybe a degree...

@Cigarmaster: You have spent the time well, indeed. It's always a lesson in your posts that I enjoy reading.
@mso489: Expert is a better word. Actually, I think you nailed the precise word!

If tobacco and tobacco pipes is NOT ones trade, one is an amateur. That makes most of us amateurs, by definition! Experts however, is by definition a highly knowledgable person. Everyone can reach that status. To become an expert only need study and practise. A lot of it!

You sure got that right, even the esteemed Bob Dylan, one of our greatest songwriters,

couldn't make the transfer to the page, his book of poetry, Tarantula, was a pretty massive flop!

Great list Misterlowercase. I'd add to that list Russ Oulette, and the folks at McClelland and C&D as "professional" pipe smokers. For the blending arts, you must be one heck of a pipe smoker. I'd also second Fred Hanna, and throw in Gary Schrier as well.

I'm a fan of Bob Dylan, both as a song writer, a performer, and a historical figure in music.

I just don't think people do him any favor by transposing the term "poet" on him. It would be like saying

Robert Pinsky, who is a poet and a former poet laureate, is a rock star. He's not. And it's not kind to say

he is. He's excellently successful as a poet, so I'd rather leave it there.

Hm. I certainly make a living in the field of pipe tobacco, although I don't know that this qualifies me as a 'Professional Pipe Smoker.' My title would be something more like: 'Pipe Smoker Who Landed a Sweet Gig.'
I would think most blenders and maybe leaf buyers would qualify as 'Professionals,' as their income would come from tasting the tobacco.
