Whether I'd listen to a pipe podcast (pipecast?) depends on the content. I'm not a fan of the "every pipe and every tobacco is great!" philosophy. If someone can't make distinctions between good, fair and poor then why should I bother? I'd rather disagree with an opinion than have ALL opinions considered "right". As the saying goes, if everything is special then nothing is.

I'm addicted to podcast, I'm an in a car 4-6 hrs a day and can only listen to so much music. It's either podcast or audio books. Just to echo some thoughts, must be entertaining as well as informative. If so -I'm in :D

I'm here for the news, articles and community. But life can't be "all pipes & tobacco".

When I walk away from the computer it's because I'm sated by this stuff.

Podcasts would be "tobacciana overload", and I probably wouldn't listen on a frequent basis.
Further, I think only podcast enthusiasts have been speaking-up here; those who aren't into it aren't motivated enough to even respond to this thread. I'm not saying that's good, and I don't want to quench your enthusiasm, but I don't see the support for it. Then again, I probably represent the codger end of the spectrum.

So I just took some advice and checked out the Oompaul podcast, and it is pretty interesting, but it is definitely not the way that I would do a podcast. Not to say that is a bad thing; Ollie knows his stuff and makes a great show, but my ideas run a little differently than his in terms of content and editing and the way I want to do things. I want to see if I can get ahold of him and pick his brain a little.

I think there is. Look at the pipe community on YouTube. Little over 2 years ago it was fairly small, but it grew into a big thing. My local tobacconist recommends it,as do I, to new pipe smokers.

I am a member of the youtube community. I have a lot of videos I have yet to put up. I just subbed you. Looks like you're off to a good start. I look forward to future videos from you.
Given what I have read on here, I might just stick with the youtube thing for the time being, but I might give a shot at a podcast sometime in the near future just to see how I like doing it. Thanks for all the input everyone! It is really appreciated.

At 47 I do not tweet or listen to pod casts and wish there was a way to delete Facebook with one button . I will do a You tube video once in a while . There are days when I would like to de-tech everything .

I listen to lots of podcasts, content is important but entertainment and production value are probably even more important. You might want to consider getting at least one on air partner as well, it's very difficult to basically talk continuously for 30-45-60 minutes. Banter between host also adds to the entertainment value. You really need to storyboard and rough script them, radio is difficult to do well because you don't have the visuals to supplement your production, you need to be able to verbally paint pictures for your listeners. Then there is another important issue, do you have a a voice others would want to listen to for an extended period of time?

Yes, I'd listen in if the topic interest's me. I listen to a couple Pod casts of different subjects. Pipes and tobaccos, cleaning and different subject related topics would be worth spending an hour or so. You'd have to have different points of view to hold my attention. I hate it when the pod caster just talks about himself and his point of view only. That's boring for me.
But, give it a try. Everything starts with an idea. You might be the next Cigar Dave.

I would definitely download and listen. I've enjoyed several of the YouTube videos that I've watched (and rolled my eyes at a couple of others...), so as long as you've got good information presented well, you should be good to go.

I think there's a lot of potential here. I think the folks here -- at PipesMagazine.com -- do a pretty good job with their weekly podcast, but for me it really depends on who the guest is each week. (I'm not the least interested in artisan pipemakers; my passion is tobacco.) For me, an interview format would be my strong preference. Unless you're Greg Pease, I'm not sure I want to listen to anyone share only their own opinions about pipes/tobaccos for 30 minutes or so.
There's a ton of really badly done pipe videos on YouTube. I recently went hunting for some tobacco "review" videos and was amazed at how awful they all were. . . unedited, unscripted, meandering, and. . . well, baffling. I saw one where a guy spent a very long minute constantly sniffing an empty can telling us, in various ways, how badly it smelled! (And I hope that wasn't anyone here!)
Finally, I'd much prefer a video podcast than an audio-only one. And it needs to be viewable on an iPad, preferably downloadable through iTunes and the popular podcast downloaders (like Downcast).
And FWIW, I'm a 51-year-old who LOVES technology.:)

To me the most important thing is the podcasts occuring on a scheduled basis. I love Olie's podcasts but you never know how long you might have to wait until the next one.
Knowing the pipesmagazine podcast is going to be every Thursday makes it a "must listen" podcast.

I listened to the "this week in pipes" podcast for a while. I guess I got tired of the same old things they did on the show.

foggy,

for starters, you CAN listen to the podcast either live or download it to your computer and listen to it.
A podcast is (as Mr. Google tells me) - a multimedia digital file made available on the Internet for downloading to a portable media player, computer, etc.
Hope this helps.
-Jason

You absolutely can! You can stream a podcast on any computer (either from going to the Web site that hosts it, via YouTube, via iTunes, etc.), smartphone, or tablet.
It doesn't sound like many folks here are actually listening to the weekly PipesMagazine podcast. Is that true? (I guess I assumed that nearly everyone was.)

There's a great podcast to listen to about pipes and tobacco already. It's called the Pipes Magazine Radio Show. Good format with a wonderful host. The host Brian Levine has been in the buisness for about fifteen years and knows a lot about pipes and tobaccos. Also, there's always a weekly guest, someone else who is a pipe smoker, maker, or blender who is interviewed. Brian usually starts the show talking about a different aspect of pipes themselves such as shapes one show, material another and so on. You can download the past episodes at iTunes, just search Pipes Magazine and it'll come up or you can listen live Thursday nights at 8PM Eastern.

To listen to the PipesMagazine podcast archive, all you have to do is click on the "Radio Show" link at the top of this page. Then just click on an episode title. When you get to that page, click on the "Click Here to Play the Show" line, and the podcast will start playing immediately.
I do think it's confusing -- and odd -- that they've chosen to call this a "Radio Show," since it's not. It's a podcast.
