The "forks in a restaurant" argument isn't as convincing to me as it could be since all of those utensils should be sanitized in a commercial dishwasher.
A view into the kitchens of many, many restaurants would leave most aghast.

You can get T.b. by being around people. Avoid people at all costs.

Q. As long as I thoroughly clean them with dawn soap and cold water, ream them, sand paper inside if bowl, brush out shank and stem, salt and rum soak, swab with pipe cleaners dipped is Isopropyl, brush it all with toothpaste, etc (maybe not in that order) does this make the pipe safe to smoke?

Just seeking peace of mind and some concurrence that my wife is nuts and not me..
That’s quite an overkill scenario, and yes your wife is nuts. There’s a reason men, by etomologic definition, cannot be hysterical.

I acquired some old pipes off eBay and now my wife is telling me I can catch TB or other. I actually already smoked out of 1 without telling her.

I'm a 39 year old bachelor, every year since I was 24 I say I need to settle down and get married, until I see some posts like this or hear a story from a family member/friend and then say to myself "Maybe next year" puffy

Compared to having sex, smoking a cleaned estate pipe is a positively sterile experience.

Logic would dictate that foregoing the risks of an estate pipe means abstaining from the other to be safe...

Try that argument with your wife and let us know how it works out.

Oh it’s a whirlwind. Early in the unlimited sex is great but after kids that goes away mostly. You love them and if they are good mothers you are lucky. I have a great wife. BUT they are all crazy in their own way. If they have only 1 insanity you are lucky. My brother married a girl who stuck her hand down his pants and smelled when he got home from work to see if he was cheating.. that marriage did not last long.. A cousin called me one day and embarrassed asked me if I am allowed to use as much toilet paper as I like because his wife only gives him 4 squares max for a crapper. I am lucky because my wife admittedly is a germaphobe and tries to manage it, and she does not waste money, is a great cook, and a terrific mother. So for better or for worse til death do us part. If you are ok not having kids then stay single and do everything you enjoy to the fullest. You can always marry at 70 and not be lonely but dogs are the most sane creatures I know..

I know there are 50 blogs already but having a little trouble searching and finding my answer. My brain tells me the answer, but we know how women can confuse us. Women seem to know a lot more about germs than men and my wife is a germaphobe.

I'd suggest Everclear (for the higher alcohol content) but otherwise that sounds very safe. I usually soak the stems too over night, since that's really the only part your mouth interacts with.

Have you watched the movie Waiting? It’s based on a true story and a real restaurant.
I worked in restaurants many years ago and have visited many commercial kitchens. Generally, if you've been in the back, you no longer want to eat there. Fortunately, the first place I worked had a Swiss trained manager and he kept the place up pretty well. Unfortunately, the soda syrup tanks in the basement were irresistible to the rats!

As an aside, I worked briefly in a McDonalds and the place was spotless!

Your cleaning routine is perfectly good.

In addition, you might try to use heat as a means of decontamination. If there was only some way to ignite a combustible fuel source in the primary chamber and draw the heat through the air passageway, you would be safest. 😀

No, wrong. Trained people, men or women, know a lot more about whatever they're formally trained on than anyone who isn't. Nowadays we have many people who think they know stuff because they watched 3 youtube videos which the algorithm fed them based on their pre-existing ideas/neuroses/misconceptions. Of course the more alarming/lurid the content the more effective it is to get clicks and try to shape their beliefs with an ultimate goal of selling them something they don't need.

The pipe is fine, TB isn't transmitted like that and you're safe :)

At B&Ms some will secretly test the airflow of pipes. I've seen pipes return to SPC unsmoked and be placed in the fresh section. You know someone tested the draw. Even some pipe makers do it. Assume you are NEVER getting a clean pipe.
This.

Ergo I never touch the stem of ANY pipe, not even a brand new one—and those are the only ones I buy, mind you—, to my mouth until I've brought it home and have thoroughly cleaned it: washed it in the sink with detergent, then disinfected it with spirits.

The negative effects of having studied medicine.

The search function of this site is broken in my computer, but years ago someone posted a link to a science article about how they found DNA traces on pipes that had been buried for centuries.
But common sense has to come into play eventually. The odds from getting sick this way are slim to none.

No. Impossible. Bacteria and viruses that can live in a person's mouth don't survive long on an inanimate object. It could happen if you use your pipe immediately after someone else. But, but, but, as Argentinian and any Paraguayan, Uruguayan, or southern Brazilian brother can attest, it's virtually impossible. The custom of drinking mate involves sharing a mouthpiece among several people one after the other, and it doesn't transmit any disease.
yeah lets reference sugh highly wonderful countries.

Sheesh, lets see about crack pipes first ok fellows?
