I got a tin of SVH (Dan's tobacco) and I found it hard to pack. should I chop it to smaller pieces?

That's the beauty of pipe smoking! You can do whatever you want! Can you post a picture of your issue?

My wife gave me a little hand grater that I sometimes use to grind leaf to a smaller size, whether it's flake/coin/plug/rope or loose tobacco with big pieces. I don't always use it by a long shot, but sometimes if a blend isn't staying lit, or I want to increase the integration of the blend or whatever, smaller pieces can do the trick. For some reason, it really improved the flavor of Peterson 3-P for me. I smoked it both ways, but it was way better in small pieces. It's a really good option, or if you want to mix blends with distinctly different cuts.

Ok maybe I miss understood the post? First of all what is SVH?

And it sounds like it is all ready in ribbon form?

The Arm of Orion
Sweet Vanilla Honeydew.
Even ribbon or ready rubbed can have strands of tobacco that are too long to facilitate some methods of packing. I grab those strands and rip them apart with my fingers.

I Smoke SVH very frequently. It’s my favorite Aro. I pack it different ways in different bowls. Mostly I rub it out well and it packs fine. But I do sometimes grind it in a coffee grinder (reserved for pipe tobacco). You can prepare it anyway you want and it will Smoke well. I also like mine on the dryer side.

I run most of my tobacco from flakes to ribbon through a dedicated coffee grinder or food chopper.

I use a weed grinder from a head shop. Turns flake into ribbon cut in just a few twists.
Now that’s a fantastic idea!
I also use a small electric coffee grinder but have to be careful or I end up with powder. A couple of light pulses works great so far.
Weed grinder would be perfect for when I’m traveling for work. Thanks for that tip.
