Well I've only got one with a P-lip but I do have an opinion. I'd like it more if they didn't sit so far in my mouth when I clench but that's just the nature of 'em. Otherwise I like it a good deal. It's one I don't particularly like to spend time clenching but I like the smoking sensation I get from it.

p-lip, no p-lip?

bent, straight?

rustication, no rustication?

sandblast, no sandblast?

sitter, no sitter?

big bowl, small bowl?

peterson, uncle A, etc...?

aros, englishes? .. what about v's and balkins?

dunhill, cornell & diehl OR macbaren , mclelland, etc...?

briar, meersh, cob?

bulldog, dublin, poker, apple, pot, etc...?
and I thought smoking a pipe would be a relaxing daily event, but in reality the plethora of choices gives me anxiety attacks!! 8O
I digress ... I have not tried a p-lip petey but I most difinately will, and when I do, I'll make sure to let you know pville :) .

I love my Petes, specially the P-Lip. For me it just seems to get a better draw than the fishtail stems and I don't in any way find it more difficult to clench. Infact I typically have a more trying time clenching my fishtail stems.

My pointy teeth and overbite make clenching a p-lip a real pain, so I gravitate towards fishtails - the wider the better. On top of that, they make me salavate like mad, never mind that I want to lick them to death.

Still, if I come across a Pete that catches my fancy, I'm not going to shy away because its got a p-lip...or a knock-off p-lip, for that matter.

In my opinion, a P-lip is authentic Peterson. A fishtail on a Peterson is just a good pipe. Pipes are a guy pleasure like a bike. Similarly there are guys who ride Harleys and guys who ride Goldwings. There are no quiet Harleys. It's the blast of loud thunder that makes for the joy of the ride. If you like quiet, don't get on a Harley.

mjtanned,
I appreciate your nostalgic view of Peterson p-lips and honor your opinion of them. However, I totally disagree that only p-lips are authentic Petersons. Even though Peterson is known world wide for the famous p-lip, they made pipes for eight years before introducing it. I think you’d be hard pressed to get any Peterson pipe maker, who put so much effort into the hand crafted series with fish tails, to say that these pipes are not authentic Peterson’s. I also disagree that a p-lip makes a Peterson a better pipe than a traditional fish tail.
Enjoy your p-lips and I'll enjoy my fish tails while they both remain Peterson's. :)

I would argue that the "Harley" is the fishtail - a simple, tested and true design, delivering a hot blast straight to the taste-buds, while the p-lip is the "Goldwing", delivering quiet, cool sips to the roof of your mouth, plus its got the extra thousand pounds of plastic hanging off of it, like the Honda.

Sorry but I cannot help but reply: the Harley has much more weight in it's antiquated engine design and the amount of chrome plated metals is far heavier than plastic. Apologies to Lawrence in advance. :worship: but I thought your motorcycle analogy was most excellent in content.

My first Pete was a fantail. Lovely smoker. Just got my first p-lip bent and it's a great smoker too. I find I can still move my tongue around in the smoke stream so that's not a problem. I generally direct the smoke across my tongue and up toward the palate and so far, after the extensive research of one bowl, I think the p-lip is just no big deal as far as the smoking itself goes. I can see where the shape would be a problem for those who like to clench the pipe in their mouth, but I generally don't do that. I think the bore and the reservoir of the dry system is going to be a lot more important to the way I smoke than the presence of the p-lip.

I love clenching the p-lips, there's something oddly enjoyable in the feeling of smoke seething through your teeth and onto your tongue. . . .that and moving the initially hot smoke directly to my teeth avoids anything resembling tongue-bite/burn (seems to actually eliminate both, though the dry system itself likely does in the bite) as it has time to cool before touching flesh.
or something like that, iunno for sure.
I love my p-lips though, wish to hell every pipe I owned had one, and strongly suspect as soon as I find a guy I like I'll get some custom p-lipped stems made up for my favourite pipes.

I just asked my local guy about his tapered pipe cleaners and he said, " you don't want those things as the BJ Long brand made overseas ". I couldn't tell by looking at them that they were inferior. He's a funny (peculiar) guy so I figured I'd have to come back here to get other suggestions for which brand to get.

Bump for newbies like me
I really want a 408 shape Peterson, but most I've seen on the estate market are P-lip. I have wo petersons, which I like very much, but they're fishtail. (btw is it fishtail or fantail ?)
So, for those that have petersons with P-lip and fishtail, which one do you prefer ?

I've yet to get a Peterson (with my birthday and St. Patrick's Day coming up I'm hoping to change that), but if the P-Lip works anything like the knock-off P-Lip WDC used on my Wellington, I think I'll like it.
