I'm always an advocate for jarring asap. I've mellowed slightly on this, however; circle tins (e.g. like those used in Peterson tobaccos) I will keep in the tin for a time. Otherwise, I don't trust tins for long-term storage. For a year tops, maybe. But no more than that.

But I also don't really care about resale value or cellaring, so take what I say with a grain of salt. Jars aren't bulletproof either, but they keep better than these flimsy tins that most tobacco is stored in.

I have had really bad luck with the SPC/Sutliff tins. They are larger than most and have a cardboard sides. They rust out quick. I'd jar those right away.

These types of tins fail quickly.

that surprises me, as I just checked my Sutliff and C/D (smaller tall round tins) and yes they have cardboard sides added on, but the whole tin itself is all aluminum. Hobbiton Piper Kevin a YouTube host just opened a McClelland tin like that from the 90s, almost 30 yrs old and the tobacco was fine? Do you live in a damp climate?

Have a few tins of Haunted Bookshop that are unopened and am tidying up my cellar. I’m not sure if it’s better to crack them and put them in mason jars or leave them unopened. My thought would be the latter.
Usually when I buy tins I just smoke straight through them. Like open and smoke nothing or almost nothing but that tin till it's gone. Maybe have two going at a time.
Though for long term storage tins should be fine but it's not a sure thing. If you think you might try to sell them later a tin is the wax seal on the letter so to speak.

It comes down to how long a period of time do you intend to cellar the tins. More than 10 years, transfer to a jar or Mylar. Less than 10 years you can decided to transfer to a jar or keep your fingers crossed. It kind of depends on the type of tin and the manufacturer.

The least reliable are the square and rectangular metal tins which use a pressure seal. Those seals are never 100% and the tins are slowly leaking from the day they were sealed. The rate of leakage varies, so some may be quite viable for decades and others are done within a few years. My last set of GH & Co tins were crap and I could just lift off the top. The contents were on the verge of turning into mummy dust after a year so I bagged them.

More reliable tins are the screw down round metal tins and the canister types, but it's all a crapshoot, despite the protestations of some here. Tins just fail from time to time, over time. They are not intended for long term storage to support a cellaring fad not of the manufacturers' making.

Do you know if the shop gets reimbursed by the distributor or C&D if you return a moldy tin? I would hate to burden the tobacco shop with that expense if they are not reimbursed. It’s not the shop’s fault.
I'm not sure. Most likely not since its not financially beneficial to send just one tin or do a refund of $12-15.
