I left it at four stars because both versions are four star blends in my opinion even though they differ greatly. The version of the last few years greatly cut down on the perique because DFK is vastly cheaper. According to Mark Ryan, DFK costs ten percent of what perique costs.

Nothing. Not even Peter Heinrich's Special Curly. Not Director's Cut either. Paul Olsen had a clone that was half way close (similar casings, but a lot less perique). I have no idea if it is still in production.

You do have to age it, but as I previously wrote, it's not like the old Three Nuns to me.

Three Nuns had 18% perique, which was a reduction from the pre-1971 versions. They invented a casing to cover up the reduction, which is why you notice the prune so much. In the case of the new Doblone d'Oro, the casings are less obvious because of the DFK.
I haven't bought any since the 2018 release, when it stopped being a very successful clone of the Va/Per Three Nuns, but was still a very fine blend in its own right. So I can't say what's in the tin these days, though if it's still getting 4 stars from JimInks it's going to be a pretty good whatever it is. The only way to answer your question is to buy a tin and try it out.
Yep, I add extra perique to almost every blend I have where perique supposed to be a major player. Im a freak for perique!
A 4-star rating from @JimInks is a powerful endorsement. But my sense is that he also rates a blend as much based on how well it succeeds at what it is trying to be as he does on how much her personally likes it. That is how I rate beer at Beer Advocate. There are plenty of brews I rate highly but also will never buy again.

That they would skimp on perique makes a lot of sense, and I certainly trust Mark Ryan to know all things perique. By the way I really wish he was still at the helm of D&R and still producing some of his old tobaccos.

@VDL_Piper and @Sigmund, I will try adding perique. Your suggestion may finally convince me to pull the trigger on some whole leaf perique and a shredder configured for shag.

I never let my personal preference on any blend affect how I rate it. I rate blends against other blends in their respective genres, and that is the only criteria I use for ratings. If I rated according to my personal preferences, a fair number of my ratings (which incidentally, I have never liked ratings) would be very different.

So how do you determine a benchmark for each category? What exactly are you comparing each blend to? I think that would help a lot with reviews.

Here are some examples: Brown Va.s versus other brown Va.s, bright Va.s versus other bright Va.s. mild English versus other mild English blends, medium English versus other medium English blends, American English versus other American English blends, cherry blends against other cherry blends, peach blends versus other peach blends, mutli-topped aros against the closest multi-topped aros that I have smoked, untopped blends versus other similar untopped blends, etc, etc. I find that more fair than any other way of which I am aware.

That confirms my supposition, and it is one of the key reasons I give your reviews as much weight as I do. I do not treat your reviews as recommendations in general, but I do within the genres I enjoy.

I do not like star or numerical ratings either. At Beer Advocate I have a devil of a time trying to get their numerical scoring formula to accurately match my written review.
