Yes, IMO, pipe cleaners CAN damage the pipe, I've seen it. You have to work on it though. If you push the cleaner in till it hits the far side of the chamber and twist them, it will act like a drill bit and drill into the briar. You'll drill right through the chamber if it is kept up. Remember, most times you use a cleaner the bottom of the chamber is damp, and soft! I always spin my pipe cleaners to get the best cleaning but when it hits the far side I back it out about 1/8 inch then twist the cleaner.
As to the OP, looks just like cake to me, nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I don't twist or go rough on it, so I'm thinking this was already there as I've cleaned every pipe the same way and never noticed it. I'm thinking it's either cake or was already there. Maybe I'll sand it some and see if it's cake

I think what happened is there is still cake I haven't gotten and when I run the cleaner thru it knocked some off. No way it would put a hole in the Briar from just touching it barely cleaning lol. Had me worried tho, I'll be sanding it some to make sure I get the cake down there

No, you didn't do it by just pushing the cleaner in. The drilling only happens by pushing the cleaner in with pressure against the wood and spinning the cleaner. You have to work at drilling them or just the results of careless habits. I'd leave the cake as is and if it tastes good just keep smoking it.

Thx. I think I was just worried because it.It is a particularly filthy Comoy's Guildhall. I have reamed the cake back and cleaned it thoroughly and it still ashy.

I am not sure but it looks almost as if when they drilled the hole they went a little too far. Or it is tar. I noticed there is sort of a groove cut in the bottom of the bowl. Now I am much less worried. It was a filthy Comoy's Guildhall (not a second) and needs a lot more cleaning to not taste so ashy. thanks. Sorry it posted my reply twice , not sure what happened. 20250119_120549.jpg

Someone gave me a pipe with a similar wound. I cleaned it up real good and figured it was from a pipe cleaner being repeatedly and mercilessly jammed into the far wall.

Looking at it more closely now, I'm not sure it wasn't from the drill bit...

Either way, it'll get smoked over whenever I get around to it

That's exactly the same spot as mine! Almost. I just wanted to make sure my pipe cleaners didn't do it, but I think it was already there. I've been quite lucky so far with charred walls under the cake bit I know it may only be a matter of time before I get a nasty surprise....
