wow it looks like it was smoked hard. Like not put tobacco in it. But like someone held a torch to the rim and literally smoked the briar. Though I read there was brief period of time ether was really popular in Ireland. And one of the dangers of ether is it can make your breath flammable (I never tried it so I can't really confirm). Maybe that's what happened to this pipe.
