I like Scotch when smoking my pipes, preferable a decent blended one. I also enjoy Cognac while smoking. However the spirit that I prefer most when smoking is rum; quality, aged rum neat in a snifter. Ron del Barrilito Three Star from Puerto Rico is particularly nice, and it's not terribly expensive either,

Thanks to this thread I've tried Erza Brooks and love it. So a huge thank you for that.
I'm reviewing it now because a friend is having his first baby boy and I'd like to get something we wouldn't normally pick up. He's the first in our group of friends to have a child.
Decisions Decisions... :puffy:

A friend gave me a bottle of "Black Maple Hill" bourbon, a small batch bourbon made in Bardstown, KY.

I'd never heard of it and it isn't sold in PA.

My go to everyday bourbon is still Eagle Rare but I recomend trying "Black Maple Hill". It goes well with an English blend or some premium burley.

I was recently introduced to Knob Creek Single Barrel. My opinion of it? Yes, just yes.

Ill resurrect this by saying I love Jameson and share a sir name, but my line came straight from Scotland. I recently purchase a regular sized bottle...3 weeks ago and it's almost gone. Goes well with most tobaccos and enhances the flavors. I also just tried Yamazaki 12year last night, damn fine Japanese whiskey. Floral and citrusy and just as smooth as the Jameson. I am buying the Jameson for $15 a bottle at my local grocery store!

My usual is a Manhattan made with Old Grandad, sometimes Jim Beam. I figure it was good enough for my grandpa it'll suit me just fine.
But, I do enjoy a good scotch from time to time. Walker, Chivas, but it's a rare occasion.

I like Scotch the most although I have yet to try many many more Bourbons and Irish Whiskys. So far I like Speyside and Islay varieties the most.

I agree with Roth the 12 year Jameson is just a little better. I also had Crested 10 that a friend brought me back from Dublin it is a distillery only special.

As I mentioned, I ran to the large liquor store yesterday. It's actually almost more of a liquor warehouse ! The variety and offering they have is absolutely huge. So, while perusing the Whiskey and Bourbon aisle, I decided I wanted to try something new, different and preferably local to the state of Texas. After talking to the whiskey guy, I decided to treat myself to a bottle of Balcones True Blue. While technically it could be called a Bourbon, since it's made with blue corn, it's labeled Whiskey. Yes, you read that right. It's made with blue corn which has a very distinct flavor and that shows in the resulting beverage.
The initial note is almost an overwhelming vanilla, caramel, so I decided to have a glass (or two.. or three) with a bowl of Autumn Evening. The True Blue has a deep amber color and oh my goodnesss. This may become one of my new favorites. A sweet, caramel, almost corn cake flavor which then progresses into more citrusy notes. The burn does linger a bit since it is cask strength, but it wasn't so harsh that you couldn't drink it straight. It was nicely complemented by the maple sweetness of the Autumn Evening and I had a very enjoyable hour or so, puffing on my Sav, sipping on the Balcones.
I think it's rather hard to find outside of Texas, but if you come across it, it's definitely the $50 or so that you would have to lay down to call it your own. For those that are lucky inhabitants of the Lone Star state, a very, very highly recommended whiskey.

Bourbon => Bookers

Scotch => Laphroaig

Irish => Jamesons (Only Irish coffee can provide, (in a single glass), all four essential food groups, alcohol, caffeine, sugar, and fat...)
since getting hooked on Mad Men I've been doing a lot of Canadian Club.
