Irish Flake burns wonderfully cool and once you get it lit, it'll stay that way for a long time. It's a very slow smoke though. My pipe takes about one and a half flakes to fill, and I've gone an hour and a half of steady smoking before only to find the pipe only half done!

Two and a half flakes of Irish Flake would definitely incapacitate anyone for awhile.

I've only had University Flake and that one is pretty strong for me. Don't think I'm quite enough of "an experienced pipe smoker" for Irish Flake, as Peterson says. I do like the flake form though, and the Burley/VA mix in UF is wonderful.

It really isn't that bad, just give it a try. If you already have had UF then there shouldn't be any problems at all.

This Burley/Virginia bears no resemblence to University Flake, but instead is reminiscent of another time when Burley smoking was more commonplace. Earthy and full, promises of a stout & rich smoking experience are made and kept from the tin. I detect no topping but instead the skilled blender's hand in taking leaf of unusual strength and flavor and combining it in a way that belies understanding of the memories of pipesters that have missed such for awhile. Without bite, it's development is supported by use of beverage of preference. For me, cold spring water kept my palate clear for a rich, nutty flavor supported by a muted sweetness not unlike almonds. Complex and seductive, it is for those seeking a developing character throughout the duration of the smoke. I suggest smoking it in the flake and in a small bowl since it burns for a very long time. A slow aproach is prudent since it packs a good nicotine wallop, but then again you can return to it if you have to set it aside for awhile. My only regret is that it will eventually end. Much of what might have been missed in the smoke will be brought to your attention in the afterglow. You get your money's worth here with clarity, direction, development and duration.

I really enjoy it and like most good flake tobacco it only gets better with a little age... :D
Hardlined... open the tin and leave it open for a couple minutes and then close it back up for two or three days before you smoke it. That little bit of open time with help take a little edge off and it should be a fine smoke. Having a good meal beforehand isn't a bad idea and don't be in a hurry... smoke it slow and before you know it you'll be smoking it on an empty stomach with a cup of coffee like I do some mornings... :puffy:
