Last week a pipe was discussed at length to illustrate functional vs. undetectable repair work:



I thought you might find the backstory satisfying.

The long-thought-to-have-been-lost-forever stummel was found by chance by its owners son. And the son, remembering how much his father had treasured and loved the pipe, hatched a plan...

Instead of announcing its discovery and getting a quick "up and working again" fix, he kept finding it a secret until it could be made NEW again. Something capable of triggering a time machine trip of nearly half a century.

Why? So he could hand it over at his dad's 85th birthday dinner.

When was that?

Did you ever figure out what the D stamping indicated?

No. Not even the Duke Street Irregulars turned up anything. (I'm amazed... maybe the first time that's ever happened)

The shape number itself, though, couldn't be LESS mysterious:
