Welcome smoker21. You are already four pipes ahead of where I was at age 18! And yeah, people thought I was strange back them too. Fortunately my girlfriend and future wife was just as strange as me....and still is...I mean we still are.

Hey Wyatt - welcome aboard! I have to be very quick cos I'm typing as we taxi to fly London to Berlin! Great to hear from you; I started a pipe at 18 and I'm still I. Love with the hobby.

Welcome to the forum. I started smoking a pipe when I was 18 and now 44 years later I still enjoy it and spend a lot of time here learning more and more. BTW, you are considered "cool" here.

Welcome to the forum
I actually started pipe smoking at 17 and switched to cigars and then back to pipes again
That is an excellent collection for someone starting out at 18
Stay on the forum and you will learn a great many things about this wonderful hobby.

Son forget about the so called cool guys, most of them drop out along life's way, like Allan I started smoking at 17, at 18 I was squatting around a cooking fire in SE Asia and smoking a pipe with the Mountain people. You've got some good equipment, you've got acess to the Internet to learn.. The most important thing in pipe smoking is mindset, SLOWWW is the key, don't rush it and you will have enjoyment for a long long time.

Welcome to the life long journey. You're off to a great start and this is a great place to learn. Don't worry about other people, find a local B&M that has a lounge and enjoy smoking with others. I mostly smoke in my Mancave, but when driving in the car and get a look from someone, I just give a nod and take a puff.

welcome to the forums dude! I was thrilled that you stand up to those numbskulls (literally). Pot will ruin their lives; I've seen it again and again. hopefully you will be able to convert some to our hobby and save them from their destructive addiction! Your pipes are beautiful and so... take good care of them. peace fellow- piper!

A fellow new guy here. (to the site but not to the Briar Brotherhood)

I started out, like you, very young. I told my mum I wanted to start smoking a pipe in the mid '80s, so for my Christmas, she gave me some money and I went into the best pipe shop in my city on a cold December day to have a look a the wonders therein. As I noted on my own first post, I bought a smooth Pete 150. I have no idea where it went and if I ever see another one in the flesh, I'll be snapping it up in a second for old time's sake. I looked in wonder at the Dunhills in the display case and was served by a very nice young man called Grant. I broke all the rules of a good briarman- pulling the stem out the minute I was finished, smoking multiple bowls without leting it rest, changing from aromatics to CONDOR and wondering why I felt sick. The most ludicrous misapprehension of my mis-spent adolescence was my packing method. For some inexplicable reason, I would compress my toabbaco into a little ball, as hard as I could, then drop it into the bowl, use a flamethrower light to get it started, then puff away like I would be flogged if I didn't finish it in ten minutes. I was also convinced that a 'real' pipesmoker never took the pipe out of his mouth, so after about 15 mintes I invariably would swallow a huge load of tobacco juice and feel sick. I didn't know any pipe-smokers then and the internet had never even been heard of outside very specialist circles, so I continued in blissful ignorance for years until I had been rushed to hospital twice with an asthma attack from trying to inhale Condor Flake like it was a Silk Cut cigarette.

You can be assured that I have learned my lesson, and now smoke more or less like a civilised man and now own several of the pipes I used to covet many years ago. In fact, the last pipe I bought from that shop was a Dunhil Amber Root 5102. This was after buying 3 Comoy Freehands. These four pipes totalled more than $2,000 at full retail, nearly a decade ago, but to my lasting sadness, I got them at firesale prices. The last time I visited the shop I shook hands with Grant, now a middle-aged gentleman, who had served me all through the years with courtesy, honesty and dignity. I wish him well.
