I’d love a smoking partner, but my friends are all way too clean - some have even gone tea total on me!
I have one pall who indulges me by shoving whatever I’m smoking that day into a borrowed pipe, taking a few puffs, then he smiles encouragingly at me, says, “This is great!” and then promptly allows it to go out… bless him for trying.

I've got my cousin to try a few things. I gave him a cob. He tries to smoke cigars but he doesn't like them. I'm going over to his place to smoke ribs this weekend. I'll bring a few extra blends in case he's feeling froggy.

Back when I smoked mostly cigars, I got several folks started on those. Not by talking them into it or trying to proselytize them but just by their observance of how much I was enjoying it. I kept a humidor with about 400 sticks and loved to hand one out if they asked for one.
That said, I have never done the same with a pipe. Who knows.............. the night is young.

You don't usually have much say in what people are in your life or what they like.

No we don’t…

So those pipe smoking buddies of yours should really be thanking their lucky stars they’ve got as generous a guide as you with those free pipes and journeys through comparative tobacco tasting!

This is often my experience too. Out of maybe ten people who’ve asked me about it, I think maybe one enjoys it regularly on his own.

Which is right and beautiful, after all. We’re fortunate to have friends who take an interest in what interests us.

I only try to get friends into pipe smoking if they are already tobacco users. I talked one into buying a corn cob and gave him a couple ounces of tobacco. Don't think it really clicked with him. Sometimes Mrs. Lumbridge smokes with me, but she's still mourning the loss of Captain Black Grape, so it's become a rarity.

I'm always glad to help out anyone who shows an interest in trying a pipe, especially a guy who already smokes tobacco. When I was a beginner and a college student with absolutely no discretionary funds, I'd occasionally lend a curious friend one of my few pipes to try out for a test smoke. A few guys liked pipe smoking enough to acquire their own pipes, a couple of times with me tagging along to a local tobacco shop to pick out a decent briar and some nice starter tobacco.

For a long time now, I've kept a couple of inexpensive, unsmoked basket pipes on hand to share with friends and acquaintances who are curious enough to try smoking a pipe. I'm happy to show someone how I pack, light, tamp, smoke, and clean my pipe — equally happy to send him home with the pipe and a pouch or two of tobacco, along with a tamper. Not everybody takes to it, naturally, but no harm in giving it a go. A handful of takers have stuck with pipes, mostly cigar aficionados, though one guy had never smoked anything.

We had company last night from a young couple we had not met before, and my wife mentioned that I was a pipe smoker. They found this interesting (amazingly) and said they had never met a pipe smoker before and started asking questions. After a while I invited them to my smoking room to take a look. They were amazed at all the pipes and the large stash of tobacco I had. After a while he asked if he could try a pipe. I explained to him the there were some things I don't share; my toothbrush, my guns, my wife and my pipes (not necessarily in the order) and that besides I didn't think if would be a good idea anyway because as a non smoker it might make him feel ill.

I gave him my usual speech about how he shouldn't just pick up a pipe for the first time and expect to be able to smoke it correctly, just like you couldn't pick up a violin and expect to play it properly the first time. I advised him to first go on line and learn about pipes while making notes and writing down questions which I would be happy to help him with, then get back to me and we would talk about it.

I'm taking bets on whether I ever hear from him about it again. If you're interested I'm giving 5 to 1 odds against. puffy

This is a good reply. I am the same way about sharing my pipes. I don't share tooth brushes or tooth picks, either. I doubt you'll hear back from him.

thats a good reason to keep a cob on hand
I second this opinion.

I keep a couple of cobs clean and I will let my friends try out pipe smoking on them. As far as tobaccos, I will bring a few choices, some aromatics (Boswell's Chocolate Cream, Cult Blood Red Moon), an English, and a Vaper. I find that my friends who smoke(d) cigarettes prefer Vapers right out of the gate.

For their first try, I will pack the pipe for them, give instruction on lighting, and let them smoke it. Of course, I let them know that it will go out several times, and they will get better with practice. After their first round, I will let them pack it and smoke it. So far, I have learned that if I pack the first one they will have a better first experience. It also gives them an extra example to learn how to pack it well.

I just smoke a pipe, I have never had anyone express an interest in it but I do know and see that they like the aroma and seeing someone smoking a pipe
back in college i got two reactions.

A few females would say about how their grandfather smokes a pipe, then shut the window or leave the area.

THe other reaction was dissapointment when they realized i was NOT smoking anything illegal.
