One of my good friends is a die-hard cigar smoker, whom I enjoy a good bull session with over some good cigars. Lately, I've been exaulting the virtues of pipe smoking with him, and he is anxious to give it a try. I've pulled out an older claw Mershaum that I've rarely used, and I'm going to give Ito him tomorrow, and start him for with a bowl of C&D Montfort Point Marine. He smelled a tin and thought it smelled great! I'll report back on the experience.

You have a good friend to give it a try, apart from my friends in academia and those in my wine club most of my friends are born again christians and just mentining to them that I smoke a pipe they started yelling may the blood of jesus set you free, well I will surely not invite them to my whisky tasting evening next week they might cause a ruckus.

Excited for you and your friend, mig19.
fafnir, I totally get where you're coming from. I'm currently in seminary (graduating this Saturday) and I definitely keep it on the DL about my pipe smoking. Although I do share it with a few that appreciate it.

Start him off with the really good stuff, uncut, that he can't find in a shop or online. Then when he comes back for more cut it a bit, get him nice and hooked as you up the price...

My friend is now a Brother of the Briar. After he enjoyed a bowl of C&D Montford Point Marine, he went on P&T.com and placed a sizable order. He has joined our ranks here on Pipes Magazine Forum as Bulldawg22. Please make him feel welcome.

I hope you advised him, or I do now, to get a bag of corn cobs from Missouri Meerschaum.

Get a bag o' seconds for under $40.00 and you'll have an instant rotation, allowing you to keep on smokin while you maintain the herd.

Pipe smoking CAN be less expensive than smoking cigars, with a little self control and self awareness.

Ssavarimuthu, congratulations on your pending graduation. I'm sure that you listen to The Country Squire Podcast. They did an excellent episode on being a pipe smoker in seminary.

Not only is pipe smoking less expensive than cigar smoking (if you ignore the cost of the pipes, ahem) but I find it considerably more interesting. There's a lot more interaction, not just passive consumption. You can mix your own blends. And the lore on the pipes alone is a separate study. I think your friend will be well pleased.

Aw, shoot. I love 'em both. A cigar is an event, a pipe is something you keep going all day long. Cheers.

Welcome, Bulldawg22! Join your friend mig19 in appreciating Royal Yacht... which does take a while to grow on you. For me, it took weeks if not months, but then while sitting under a Bodhi tree, I saw the light!

I think at this point while he's waiting for his order from P&C to arrive,he would stuff his socks in his pipe and smoke it, which may be a good intro to RY!

That's pretty cool of you. I wish I had a knowledgeable go-to when I started pipe smoking. I just had to figure things out for myself. I'm still not sure I know what the hell I'm doing.

To all, thanks for the kind words, I am the friend that Mig19 has introduced to pipe smoking, I've had the Montford Point Marine blend and Frog Morton on the Bayou. I've had a few bowls over the past few days and I am awaiting the arrival of my order. I'm very excited to experience new blends as I learn what suits my taste. I look forward to hearing recommendations from you all. I will let you know what's in my grab bag when it arrive. By the the Frog Morton goes great with a single-malt.

Welcome to the forums bulldawg. You will learn a lot here and get many opinions for sure. Royal Yacht is a good blend, stout if you like strong blends

Hiya bulldog! Welcome to the herd! If you like the Frog Morton stuff, you might want to try Old Dog, too. Don't neglect GL Pease's English blends. You'll also enjoy Black Forest by Russ Oulette. These are just some of the tobaccos that I really enjoyed when I first started smoking a pipe. I still enjoy all of them, but have added Virginia and VaPers (Virginia/Perique blends) to the mix. No pun intended, which reminds me of this really bad joke I heard on Prairie Home Companion tonight:
"I sent 10 puns into a contest to see if any of them would win a prize. No pun intended"

I tried the CAO Moontrance over the weekend very good, I enjoyed the hint of bourbon, also tried Abacus and Conspiracy by Cult, not disappointed by either of them.
