The only time I get anything like tounge bite anymore is when I smoke something like VaPers or straight Virginia blends. Anything else and I don’t get bitten at all.

If we were in 1940s, I would say "you pussy! toughen up your mouth by smoking more often!" But we are in 2024. So, it took me awhile until my mouth didn't feel like it was fried after pipe smoke. Perique was a big killer for me. I remember Davidoff Medallion killing my mouth after a smoke. Few nights ago, I had Back Down South with my son. I felt that Perique for two days. When I was smoking pipes more regularly, I didn't feel much of any discomfort like when I first started smoking. It probably stopped after good six, nine months later.

I developed a sensitivity to Rustica about a year in, and have been staying away.
It presents as a metallic-y sensation, almost like a “smooth” version of putting a near dead 9v battery down the center of my tongue. Nothing like typical tongue bite (which I’ve had plenty of).

The only real tongue bite I got was from Mac B's Virginia #1. I swear each bowl was like smoking hornet stingers. I dropped the jar and it broke. I thought it poetic that my VA #1 was mixed with actual glass shards. I tossed it and did not re-up.

I used to hurt my mouth with steam. I finally learned to smoke slow and dry. Stopping candy-coated blends (looking at you Molto Dolce) helped as well.

Margate has one leaf that makes my mouth taste like dish soap. I want to like it, but I can't smoke it.

Good luck finding your enjoyable rotation. Only way to do it is to do it.

The struggle is real... still looking for my blend. Also, adjusting dryness, slowness, etc. I think new research out of Denmark shows the average new pipe smoker has to be told 10k times before they finally dry their tobacco and smoke slow. I've started baking mine in the oven for a bit which is really helping turn the corner for me, though I am forfeiting some flavor I think. I forgot the last batch and burned it up but did confirm a 100% guaranteed method for no tongue bite. Just fill your entire house with smoke and walk around breathing, no bite at all!

Don't use your oven. Just put a portion of tobacco in a bowl and set it aside for 30 min to even a whole day. It will dry out.
I do that as well. The ambient humidity here is so high on the gulf coast of Alabama I was having to leave them out for days to see progress. I've been toying around with microwave and oven to help kick start it. All part of the fun/frustration of learning this hobby I guess. One thing that works for one person will be the absolute worst for another...

You might try an activated charcoal filter. The remove a quite a bit. It might remove whatever is causing you problems. If it doesnt you can always pit in an adapter and smoke it like a normal pipe. So worst cace scenario is that you end up with an extra pipe…that cant be a bad thing

I saw some other thing online recently that I’d never seen before. It’s some kind of gravel-like stuff you actually struck in the bottom of the bowl. Anyone heard of this stuff?

In case anyone is still looking at this thread: what I notice from tobacco that bothers me is that right from when I start smoking I feel a kind of coating on my tongue and roof of my mouth. This feeling of a “coating” must be an immediate reaction. I don’t get this with Peterson Flake or Pete’s Navy Rolls. I do get this feeling from a lot of tobaccos, including anything dark fired.
